If you go to to your connection manager and the select service status it will tell you if your BIS or BES is connected thru wifi. Google for it there hacks or methods to force it to use wifi (I haven't encountered this problem) Also if you turn off your phone radio or have no service opera mini wont work even with APN it uses the APN to get to the t-mobile network and the thru the wifi piggybacking on t-mobile's network set up.
