hacks or workarounds for Verizon subscribers to get apps
we all know the story about Verizon; as a VZW wireless subscriber, one is obligated to their choices from GPS/navigation, to ringtones, to games, wallpaper, personal productivity tools, and any other cool stuff.
I just started my 30-day trial with my first BB. Got the pink Pearl and while falling in love with it when ordering, I ended up completely forgetting about VZW's aggravating tactic to pigeonhole users into using only their product choice and always with a not so insignificant cost attached.
Nevertheless, I know many of you are much smarter than I am and hope...no pray...that someone has figured workarounds for those of us who own this phone and are Verizon Wireless subscribers.
If all else fails, I suppose I could go back...

What exactly are you looking for? I'm not sure why people are convinced that verizon is trying to pigeonhole you. They are a business and as such are for profit.....they're not the only ones to do it. With that being said, I have had my 8130 for 2 months now and I haven't been blocked by verizon once. 3rd party applications are abundant for this device, as with any PDA. First of all Ringtones....and MP3/WMA or any other song you put on the device can be applied as a ringtone. There are various wallpapers/themes that you can download....try a google search.
The problem is everyone wants something for free...3rd party apps aren't from verizon, that's why they're 3rd party. I've never used "Get IT Now", instead of VZNav I use google maps.

Try a site called blackberryforums.com. Excellent forums (obviously) and they have areas just for the Pearl and another just for 3rd party apps.

I've downloaded a bunch of free 3rd party apps to my phone so far, and as far as I know the only thing that VZW has disabled is the GPS working with anything other than VZNav. I'm slightly upset at that because I love the google maps interface (a free 3rd party download), but overall VZW has left the device alone and you're free to do what you want with it.
I know I'm in the minority, but this is my first blackberry and I've fallen in love with the VZW theme. I couldn't imagine going to anything else - it looks so alien to me.

Google maps will work on the pearl.
