Has anyone here tried one of those wall chargers that you just put the battery in?

No. Why would you want to with the versatility of the mini usb? I interchange my mp3, GPS and my W755 with my wall, car and usb charger.

How about if you have another battery for it.
Motorola recommends not using the phone while it is connected to a charger, so having a second battery is probably a good idea if you use the phone a lot and need to have the phone available all the time... BUT having a second battery doesn't do much good if the only way to charge it is by having it in the phone.
