VZW new data plan policy
I spoke to vzw cust service twice now.
Any new smart phones released by vzw after 11/14 MUST have the unlimited data package.
If you decide to drop the data package at anytime in the future you will have to get a new device. They will let you keep the old phone but will block its data functions including SMS. (Although SMS is not included in the unltd data package but is regarded as data.)
This new phone has every function I might possibly need. But I dont NEED email and internet 24/7 so the wifi ability would be useful to update the phone when at home. I really object to being required to pay for something I dont need. I know why vzw are doing it, cos if a phone has wifi people wont bother buying the data plan and they'll lose money...

verizon is doing it because why have a phone that your not going to utilize? a lot of people that buy these, buy them for there kids that think its "cool" and want a full keyboard, and other random stuff, they put a pay as you use plan on there, and next thing you know $500 bill because there kid didn't know that internet explorer used data, and other dumb crap like that. Its for the greater good in my opinion. It avoids hassle and problems later on down the road.

Verizon is doing this because PDA/Smartphones use the web for more than just email and internet. Because it's not a regular phone data is transmitted differently through the web service like picture/video mail, ringtones, etc. Then people send/receive items to their phone and rack up whopping data bills that they want to be credited for although it's their fault that they racked up the charges on their bill. Since you feel the need to only use wi-fi feature when you want then sorry you are going to wait to find a wi-fi spot to send/receive your data transmissions. If your using it just because you need a calendar to schedule stuff and don't want to use the data features get a regular phone and a palm pilot. It'll do the same thing.

I bought a PDA phone because I got tired of carrying both a phone and palm pilot (bat belt syndrome). The fact that it could use wifi was an extra bonus. I'm not going to pay $30 per month just to update facebook when I sitting right next to my wifi and can use it for free,

I'm not sure what to make of all this BS. I too believe that since they are offering more Wifi devices they may feel they'd loose money. On the flip side if you're stupid enough to run up a data bill without a plan you'd think Verizon would just take the $ and run.
I currently have a Q and sync with my outlook calender and contacts (great for keeping track of sales appointments) and don't need a data plan...but now I'm being possibly forced into one - come on!
I should be taking delivery of an i760 via eBay next week and hoping I can just activate myself and get what I want, It's a shame... The only other idea I came up with was that the new Moto Q (if purchased online) doesn't appear to have mandatory data plan tied to it yet (maybe...

would it be possible at all to buy the phone for full retail (without the contract) and then just activate it to your plan? thus bypassing all of the crap verizon makes you buy aka $30/month for a data plan.

According to the rep I spoke with last week, the answer is no. You can't activate any new PDA/phone without a data plan....like with the Blackberry. (but of course like with any issue, ask 5 reps....get 5 answers!!)
Personally I disagree with this new policy, but I do see VZW's point with wi-fi on more devices than ever now, but I really think it can be implimented differently. Maybe offering another 50-100 off the price if you sign a data plan, or just charging 50-100 MORE if you decline data. Or maybe offering to allow you do drop data after a set time (a year maybe?). I also think they should lower the data package in price as well if we are forced to purchase it. Another 15 or even 20 wouldn't feel as bad after paying hundreds for the...

I don't think its about control i think its about price i think they are doing this to lower the price of these device the saga is $199.99 and its rev A and a global device I bet its a expensive phone for Verizon to buy. I bet they could go back to there old policy of one price if you buy the internet and keep it and one price if you want to buy the device without if you done buy the internet like $199.99 for a two year with internet commitment $399.99 for the non internet and let people choose. Although I agree with Verizon pick one way to do biz and stick with it much easier to enplane personally I think it a good way to do it just like the IPhone must have internet I think we are seeing a industry trend

Spoke to a VZW customer service rep about this at length yesterday. She said that the i770 didn't come up as a PDA model(?) on her list and therefore this new data plan policy CAN be gotten around on this phone by putting a data block on the line meaning no email or internet except where there's WiFi. And for my needs, that's just fine. Text messaging would still work anywhere of course.
She did say that this new policy really applies to ALL Blackberrys, no ifs ands or buts.
Been doing all the research on the Saga and am planning to upgrade my old XV6600 WM2003SE phone to it in Feb or Mar. This rep notated all this on my account just in case.

This is called tying and it is illegal. If you are willing to buy the smartphone unsubsidized (if you have to) you shouldn't be forced to buy the data plan to activate the voice service.
