Can a data package be skipped and use Wi-Fi for net use?

Just curious and getting research on big dogs of the smart phones. I hear the Iphone has Wi-Fi, so, can i skip at&t's data package (haven't looked into their plan details) and use the wi-fi for my internet?

NOPE. Data plan REQUIRED for life of contract or as long as you use the iPhone
