Nokia E71 / E71x
Change default firmware?
Does any one know where/if/how I can flash the handset with some generic firmware or the at&t firmware (even though i don't think they support the handset yet)??
Thanks!! -jn
Why did you buy a european model when you could have bought the north american model (with AT&T 3g network bands) from Newegg.
Yes it would be possible to reflash it. Just not very easy to do yourself. I would look over on Howard Forums or the Nokia discussion forums.
But you would have to get the flashing software itself. Which is not an easy feat to find.
It works okay, but some of the Orange features (like the mailboxes and some other annoyances) can't be deleted which I figure a US/AT&T firmware flash would alleviate.
Thanks for the tips. -jn
Note there are 3 (Yes THREE) different models of the E71. The E71-2 (on newegg) is the usa model. the only real different on the other two are the 3G bands on the device.

KS, your advice may prove to be invaluable to me. The ad said this unit has 3G, it doesn't?? It says:
# WCDMA 900/2100 or 850/1900 or 850/2100, maximum speed 384/384 kbps (DL/UL)
# HSDPA class 6, maximum speed 3.6 Mbps/384 kbps (DL/UL)
Notice the WCDMA part. That part lists 3 different sets. This number. Or this number. OR this number... It does NOT give you a straight answer what version of 3G it uses.
Here's the list from Nokias website.
Operating frequency
* E71-1 Quad-band EGSM 850/900/1800/1900, WCDMA 900/2100 HSDPA
* E71-2 Quad-band EGSM 850/900/1800/1900, WCDMA 850/1900 HSDPA
* E71-3 Quad-band EGSM 850/900/1800/1900, WCDMA 850/2100 HSDPA
AT&T uses WCDMA ...

Thank you again for your patience and assistance and thorough explanation. -jn
But at least you will have an unlocked and unbranded E71 to use and play with! Enjoy!
If you have any questions about the phone I would go over to nokia's discussion forums as they will obviously be a lot busier than this forum. And more helpful in the long run.
Posted using my own nokia E71 while eating brunch. Mmmm. Sourdough philly cheesesteak sandwich.
