e71 and data plan
I wish to purchase this phone direct from Nokia. I asked the ATT rep at a local Corp store if I could do so without contract penalty or renewal and it is no problem. However, the ATT rep claims I MUST have the $30 data plan even though I am not purchasing the phone from them. He quoted the new Smartphone Sept 1st rule. Is this true? I don't want data, only the Wifi feature.

As far as I know AT&T's system won't know you are using an unlocked smartphone on their system. Since the E71 is not a phone they sell it won't list in their system as a smartphone.
I myself am using the $15/month unlimited media net package for internet. So far so good.
If you do get the E71. The easiest way to make sure you don't use AT&T's data network is to remove the AT&T Internet access point that the E71 will auto configure when you turn it on.
