3G capable?

PlayboyPenguin

Is it true that this phone will not be 3G capable in the USA? Will it be limited to EDGE speeds when not in a WiFi area? If so I am betting that is why VZW allowed the WiFi feature.

That would be the only thing that would turn me off this very sharp looking phone.

I do have some other issue but they are minor. I am not a fan of the proprietary connections that require adapters to even hook up a set of earphones.

I do love the idea of the optical mouse though.

It's CDMA, and it is 3G (EVDO Rev. A).

EDGE is a GSM technology, so that's not relevant. You might be thinking of the i900, which is the GSM version of the Omnia.

The i900 and i910 are two distinct phones.

To clarify:

"Yes" to "3G capable?"

"No" to "Is it true that this phone will not be 3G capable in the USA"

In fact, it won't work at all in most countries outside of the USA.

Cool, but I am still seeing multiple reports on the internet that the Omnia is RevA capable but the radio is software limited and will not operate at 3G speeds.

it has something to do with the differences between European and North American networks and software licensing.

PS: In his review of the Omnia, Phonedog confirmed that the phone does not work at 3G speeds.

Fast forward to the 3:10 mark for his comments on the operating speed.

That's a completely different Omnia. That's the i900 for Euro/Asian GSM/WCDMA networks.

The Verizon one is the i910, and it's CDMA; completely different guts.

Thanks, you beat me to that info. Right after I posted that link I paid a bit more attention and noticed he was reviewing an unlocked gsm phone and not the CDMA version.

Looks like this will be a sweet phone. I just wish the screen was a touch larger.

That's ridiculous. It makes no sense, and the one I had was definitely operating at full 3G speeds. It was very fast.

Thanks for your posting, this 3G business will be around a long time.

Can you clarify about the world phone, I glean from your posting that this is not a world phone?

Correct. Verizon offers only a small handful of CDMA+GSM world phones. This is not one of them.

Can you expand a little on the proprietary connections? Is this a 2.5 or 3.5 headphone jack? And I assume you mean, its not a standard USB connection.

The port on the Omnia is a proprietary connector (only Samsung makes it). Samsung gives you the following in the box:
- AC power supply with the prop connector.
- Sync cable with the prop connector on one end, standard PC USB connector on the other end.
- FM antenna/headset dongle. Has prop connector on one end, and a 3.5 stereo headset connector on other end.
- Splitter dongle. Has Prop connector on one end and a 3 way split on other end that accomodates: AC Charger prop connector, Sync cable prop connector, and a 2.5 port for standard wired headset.

Does not come with Video Out dongle. Purchased seperately, you can connect your Omnia to a TV via yellow composite RCA and Red/White Stereo RCA connectors.
