When this phone is closed, are the buttons on the outside inactivated?

I have a samsung convoy SCH U-640 According to Verizon Customer Service, they do not have Backup Assistant as they no longer support this phone, so I have no way to backup my contacts or pictures. Does anyone know if I can connect my phone to my PC and do some type of backup? If not, does anyone know of a third party vendor or program that I can use?

could someone please help me figure out how to get the time back on the front of the phone once you place a pic on it. I would rather have the time then a pic and you can't have both. For some reason i can't find a way to do it. thanks

Just a word of warning. There is no "waterproof" phone, but ruggedized does not automatically mean that a phone is water resistant either. The Convoy is a solid phone but does not have any of the gasketing or sealed electronics that are present in other ruggedized phones such as the Boulder.
