So I have been waiting and waiting for Sprint to release a version of the BB 9000 aka Bold. This phone appears to have everything else BUT the WIFI that I was so looking forward to. Does anyone know if Sprint will release another BB world phone, this time with WIFI? As a former Verizon employee I would have expected the numbers of the phone model to have nearly exact, if not more features then the previous model. So here we have the BB 9000 (Bold) and the BB 9630 (Tour). Clearly a model upgrade by numbers alone. Yet this thing doesn't have WIFI 😡 . This sucks!

Why is everybody complaining a 😎 bout wifi !!! Maybe the reason they dont add it is because a data package is required. Plus why would you want to my a blackberry and not get the data package ?????? and then you wont need wifi anyway.... 😎

As stated in my previous message... I am a former employee of VZW. But that is besides the point. I have been waiting and waiting for a phone like the Bold to come to Sprint. I was thoroughly impressed w/all its features when I saw it out in Dubai before it even hit the US market. From the screen and leather back, to the menu/software, camera, and of course the WIFI feature! Let me ask you this question. Why purchase a phone so expensive, let alone a world phone w/o WIFI? Did you know, that at "some" airports reception can sometimes be sketchy? Or did you know a person can make a FREE call using Skype IF they have WIFI on their phone? Why pay for a world phone if it doesn't boast EVERY possible feature imaginable? You pay the price...

My phone internet always works fine at airports. And I have the unlimited plan through sprint, so I don't care much for skype, or making free calls.
...
I have the unlimited plan too! Wooptie do da day! Do you have a clue what a world phone is typically used for? I apologize for my ****iness here. However, if you are going to take the time to look on forums about a WORLD phone, then you should be getting it for the right reasons! I make international calls, Skype is a VOIP service making it free to call ANYONE in the world, ANYWHERE in the world, for FREE so long as the other user has Skype! Skype is only available on phones with WIFI! With WIFI, I could make FREE calls from any airport, hotel, or WIFI location ANYWHERE in the world! Good lord, do your research before you comment on anything bud!
Why do you even bother to look at this phone if you aren't buying it for necessity?...

I have the unlimited plan. So I'm able to call anywhere in the us for free. I have no use for free services from skype or whayever its called. I don't leave th U.S either so don't need wifi. Actually I'm buying for the kool display and camera :-D

threeglude, you keep answering your own question about wifi built in....free calls, free global calls, free free free...Those are bad words in the wireless communities, they need revenue. global and data revenue are the biggies right now. att gets the majority of their revenue from the iphone data, they can afford to offer wifi in their devices.
...
I am simply defending my opinion with good, logical responses. In one of my earlier responses, I mentioned how ATT REQUIRES you to have the DATA package in order for the WIFI on the phone to even WORK. Also, I found the article about the wifi being added beginning of next year after I posted this thread.
Anyway... Why not copy what the competition is doing but do it better? As many in the biz world will say. The following is my personal quote, but similar to previous quotes from business leaders. "You cannot reinvent the wheel, you can however, use this as your building block and improve on it." The same is applicable to the business world. Look at what businesses in your field are doing, copy it, then improve on it. There is no ...

And verizon requires the data plan on all smartphones period.
Verizon consistently has the most net adds and lowest churn in the industry, so chances are they are doing something right. They are looking at what competitors offer and adopting it, but this doesn't mean they have to take every single feature that another carrier comes out with (they seem to be doing rather well without rollover, for example)
ATT pushed for wifi in their phones because they operate countless wifi hotspots nationwide, hotspots that you can access for free if you have their data plan, and so putting wifi on the devices would encourage people to get smartphones when most of their coverage was still EDGE.
Verizon pushed their EVDO out faster.
Yes, wifi ...

aside from that point..ATT's network cannot handle the capacity of users accessing the net at the same time..so they need to put their other customers on their wifi network.. 😈 😛

If you're a former verizon employee, you should know that when a company redesigns a phone to go from CDMA to GSM (or GSM to CDMA). Just because a GSM phone boasts a feature does not mean the CDMA version will. Heck, the Snap for Sprint doesn't have wifi while the Ozone (verizon's version) does, and they are both CDMA. You should know this.
there is no current CDMA blackberry with Wifi.
The next version of the tour will have wifi, as will the storm 2, and most likely every blackberry officially launched after that.
And sprint/verizon don't care about skype calls because you need their data package (and obviously cell service) to have the phone active, so skype calls are nothing more than data to them.
Most customers will not...

Firstly, I agree to only a certain extent regarding the features/hardware of one model vs another. Secondly, why not wifi? Sure, it is a small "niche" market, but just because it is a small market doesn't mean you shouldn't capitalize on it. There is still, plenty of money to be had in EVERY angle. VZW claims to be the best, then why not offer EVERYTHING in the phones? Requiring the data package just like ATT in order for the wifi to be unlocked. Hello, that simple! Third, if you knew anything about Skype you would know that it does NOT work on ANY data package, it ONLY works thru wifi. Period. Lastly, regarding the price point on this phone. Sure, it is cheap, when you compare prices of smart phones just three years ago. However,...

If you think 50-100 profit on a phone is a big deal, you were selling the wrong way.
The money is in the contract, not the phone. The markup on a phone is SIGNIFICANTLY lower than the markup on other items.
Take a Designer shirt. even including taxes, let's assume that the "high quality" shirt costs lets say $5 to make, tag and ship. That same shirt will sell for nearly $50-$100 over here. (and that is most likely the sale price)
That means the "profit" on the device is 10x-20x the cost of the shirt. The margins get crazier the cheaper the product, tshirts and "inpulse buys" have insane profit margins.
Then lets take cellphones, even assuming that "high" markup of $100, that is a "profit margin" of what? 20%? That is .2 for...

One last thing: Verizon already requires the data package to have the phone working on their network. No data package=the phone cannot be on your plan.
Been that way for quite awhile on blackberries, and it's now that way for all new smartphones.
You really want wifi, get the Ozone. It is a global roaming phone with GPS, WIFI, GSM and all those things you love, for $50 on a contract.
...
Also, I would never purchase a smart phone w/o getting the data package. If you can't afford the data package you shouldn't be looking at a smart phone to begin with, PERIOD!
Can someone actually answer my other question? Does anyone know if Sprint will offer the Bold, EVER? Personally, I like the size, look, and feel of it over the new Tour. It just looks and feels classier. Anyone w/me on this one?

Hi Threeglude, I have to agree that is was a poor move for both Sprint and Verizon to release this Tour without WIFI. Most likely, they wanted to capitalize on getting this phone out asap rather than make sure it had that feature. At this point I just want my Sprint BB Tour. I ordered it on Sunday morning at 7:30 and as of today, Wednesday July 15th it still has not shipped yet and the website says there may be delays. :-( Why is Sprint always the last ones to get new Blackberries? I know several people who have jumped ship because of this. Some of my friends are already enjoying their Blackberry Tours and I have to wait another 24 hours to see to see if it even shipped. Sucks. Anyway, to get back to your Bold question, my guess is that ...

Sprint announced that next year they are rereleasing a wifi version of the tour, and Verizon stated that they would start requiring blackberry to put it in any newer phones that Verizon picks up. It's not a big secret.
It's not going to be called the Bold. The Bold is a GSM phone made for ATT. The Tour is a CDMA phone.
Honestly, when they switch between technologies, the companies do do more than replace a few wires.
I can't speak for sprint, but there are already quite a few phones available for Verizon that have wifi on them for people who have to have it. The OP has an aversion to search functions or he would see that as well.
...
Cell phone manufacturers have been GSM and CDMA phones for years. Its not like this is new technology. Yes, it is more then just replacing a few wires. But like I already said, its not exactly new technology. They already have a building block to start with. Its not like they are starting from scratch. I guess we'll just agree to disagree.

there is a lot more to a phone than what radios it has built in. GSM and CDMA have been around for years, yes, but there is a difference between even Rev 0 and Rev A. It's not all the same.
cellphones from 3 years ago are nothing like what we have now. even some of the most basic "free" phones today would've been high priced phones back then.
...
the Tour IS the Bold for Sprint, and they are re-releasing the tour with wi-fi next year.

no one wants the bold anyway with that ugly leather intimation back, looks ugly messes up the whole phone when u turn it around!!
