Still bummed about the data service requirement
I knew Verizon would have to do something to make sure we couldn't use the WiFi feature for free... so now it's an additional $360 per year if you want this phone... ($30/month over your call plan).
Are there any thin phones that don't require it aside from the LG Chocolate touch?

You aren't being charged for using the WiFi. They're insisting on a data plan for all "smart phones". It's a business. VZW is subsidizing some of the phone cost because most people don't want to pay $400, $500, or more for a phone. You get a discounted phone, VZW get a monthly revenue stream - a greater stream if you are on a smart phone w/a data plan.

You are absolutely correct. It is a business. Reminds me of a movie quote... "Greed, for lack of a better term, is good." Not the best tactic for creating a good corporate image.
I wouldn't mind as much if they allowed clients to purchase an unlocked phone and attach it to the network without the data plan, but they do not allow that either. That's where the excessive greed creates dismay amoung Verizon clients. Not that I will change to another vendor for my cellular service - I still think Verizon is awesome service, but it does create a bad image that has been discussed many times on all message boards.

Companies got tired of dealing with customers calling in every month to complain about data charges on their data enabled devices, so it became more beneficial to require data on all devices than to deal with these call ins.
Yes, I would prefer that I could buy a phone and not add data if I didn't need it (though I LOVE it on my droid) it would create a headache for customer care. The only way I could see if is if there were no way customers could despite the methods used to ensure no PPU charges (which woul...

All carriers require a data plan on all smart phones. That's all there is to it.
Why would you buy a smart phone-that's MADE to do web, email and apps- if you don't intend to use it as such?
How many people with Wondows laptops don't connect to the Internet? Sure there are probably a lot, but generally everyone with a laptop that runs Windows will connect, so too will the folks with a Windows Mobile device.
