Is there any way to link contacts (gmail) with google calendar?
For example, is there a way to have a birthday as part of contact information and then that can be sync'd to calendar...seems intuitive

I believe this happens automatically when you set up your gmail account on the device. The calendar should go in the calendar app on the phone.
Google calandar also has a mobile notification setting if it dosent set up on its own. Its under settings > mobile setup

Google calendar syncs with phone...however does not seem to relate to the contacts list at all. There is no place in contacts to list dates (ie birthday)...so if a reminder comes up on calendar, it does not link back to contacts...I think I am explaining this correctly.
