Negative. I spent like almost four hours trying to sort thourgh all the material on the web about how to do the root I had to give up so I could go make lunch and when I tried to get back on the web my parents called and said they wanted to take us out to dinner. I can't pass up free food so I'm trying again tonight. Is there some kind of patch I have to download to my computer and then to the phone or how does it work?

Yes, there's a download made by HTC that downgrades your software. I found the link to it on XDA developers forum.

I just rooted my Hero about a month ago...In my opinion the easiest way to do it is to go on youtube, type in "how to root your CDMA hero", and watch the video. They do a great job taking you through the process step by step. It only took me about a half hour to root it.
Most of the videos also give you a link to the XDA developers forum. From there you can load on the ROMS...let me know if your still having trouble and I can post the link to the video along with some step by step directions.
