I have been contemplating this decision for about a month or two and need some help swaying my decision.
I have played around with both phones exclusively and have both good and bad about them both on here. I love the Droid's screen and the OS however do not like the keyboard. On the flip side I looked at the Droid and immediately thought of the Voyager that I have now and I know they are no where close to being the same type of phone but am torn. I kind of big hands so I am not sure the Eris is a good choice with the all touch screen? Thought?

Is a camera with flash and a slide-out keyboard worth an extra $100 to you? If so, then go with the Moto Droid. Otherwise, why not just get the HTC Droid Eris? HTC put considerably more effort into its offering, and it shows.
...
Agreed. Flash or no flash pictures still suck in low light. In just a few short weeks the OS will be the same for both phones. I'm a big guy and have no problem with my eris. My guess is that if you already don't like the physical keypad for the Moto Droid you're going to be sticking to the virtual keypad anyway. The Moto is marginally faster in optimal conditions, but in weaker reception areas you won't notice the difference. And Sense UI is something the Moto doesn't have. I honestly can't believe there is a price difference.

Wow
Thanks for the great feedback. I will definately go with the Eris. I appreciate the feedback from the big guys out there that can understand how hard it is to type on a virtual keyboard with big hands. I am looking forward to getting the Eris and making the most of the Googled opened phone for Verizon that doesnt require me to have any of the Verizon software installed....Any idea as to when the OS update is set to hit the Eris and whether or not its an over the air upgrade?
...
The update will be ota. Rumored for late January.
...
The Eris' software keyboard is great. I can type with both thumbs in portrait view with no problems. Thing is, even if you don't like something within Android, you can swap most aspects of it out with another solution. Don't like the keyboard? Install another. Don't like the messaging app? Install another.
...
Umm I didnt know you could switch out the keyboard if you didnt like it
...
Yeah, you can. I like the default keyboard, although I kinda wish that someone would make one with certain keys (namely Shift) being a bit larger. I haven't tried any of the other available keyboards, to be honest, because I seem to get the impression that their auto-correct isn't as good as that of the stock keyboard.
...
how do you go about switching the keyboard?
...
Just searched in the marketplace under "keyboard", got 315 matches, a lot are skins for keyboard programs and it seems like the keyboard programs cost a couple bucks - but I didn't spend a ton of time searching either.
...
ive been to the market place and i noticed the "skin" thing....what exactly is a "skin"???? is it just like change the color of the keys or something ๐คจ i dk im just confused about the whole "skin" deal....Any idea?

...
A skin just makes the keyboard look different. it's basically a theme of sorts, usually changing the appearance of something without changing the underlying functionality (although there are exceptions to this).
...
exceptions like???? so if i wanted my keys and program to be the SAME but the COLOR of my keys to be lets say green, i would be able to do that ๐คจ that would be kool as F*** ๐
...
I meant exceptions in that it could differ based on the program. For instance, on a PC, Winamp can have different skins that also change the locations of buttons and whatnot. On keyboards for Android, however, I'd assume that the skins would only change the color and styling of the keyboards.
...
awesome...im scare to download one of the skins because last time i tried to switch stuff arround i ended up eraseing everything ๐ โน๏ธ lol but do you have any suggesstions for apps or anything like that??? i would really like to experience the FULL CUSTOMIZATION that this phone has the capability to do i just cant find anyone who honestly knows how to work the phone to its potential or who is willing to atleast show me ๐คฃ if you could "help" that would be great..THANKS!!!

...
You'd need to use the respective keyboard to use any of those skins, anyway. It's very easy to change keyboards, especially since you'll usually find full instructions on how to do so in Market, as well as on each app's official site.
...
ok so first get new keyboard...... let me see what happens this time. ๐ณ
...
also...if i do get a new keyboard i will loose the "stock" keyboard so my ? is if i do not like the new one will i be able to go back to the original one because i really like the spell check and all that stuff that it has on it.
...
also...does anyone have the better keyboard like the black and blue one thats 2nd or third down from the top??? its $2.99....is it worth it??? and is the 2.99 a 1 time fee or is it monthly?????
...
I tried SoftKeyboard, which is very good. I just prefer the HTC keyboard. For the record, many custom Android builds (even for non-HTC) devices tend to use the HTC keyboard. It's that good.
...
I personally wouldn't swap out the HTC keyboard. I know several people with Moto Droids, and I couldn't type on that stock keyboard to save my life. This one is SO much better! Don't even want to look for another one - it's fantastic!
...
The only slightly annoying thing about the HTC keyboard is how small certain keys (namely Shift) are. I suppose that spacing such keys further away from the others could be another solution to my problem. Proximity correction tends to get in the way whenever you're rapidly trying to type several capital letters in a row (since I don't use Caps Lock very often), because it thinks that you're trying to type A's or Z's.
...
I usually put caps lock on - one thing I like since my Curve didn't seem to be able to do that...I don't find myself even turning to landscape all that much, I can type fast in portrait mode, but I have adopted a new style of texting with one finger instead of my thumbs. It seemed annoying at first, but I've gotten quite good at it.
...
I can type with both thumbs in portrait mode. The Eris has made me one of the laziest mobile typists ever, thanks to its AMAZING auto-correct. XD
...
You won't lose the keyboard (unless you uninstall it, which I suppose *is* possible). You simply change keyboards in your settings.
Settings > Locale & Text > Touch Input
Also, I believe that you'll need to change a setting within the keyboard by bringing the keyboard up and tapping that gear icon toward the bottom left corner of the keyboard. It's been a little while since I used another keyboard, so I'm not 100% sure.
...
ok so pretty much im saying fu** it and keeping the "stock" keyboard...ITS JUST AMAZING!!!! auto-correct is great however sometimes annoying...is there any way to change the color of the letters you are typeing? or anyhing like that? i would really like to customize the phone a lil more cuz its pretty much just the basic right now..ANY COOL IDEAS?? THANKS!!!

Not on the stock keyboard. Other keyboards might allow you to, however.
