Tmobile uses the same 3g frequencies as Europe, so making it work with Tmobile means it can be sold overseas as a 3g phone as well.

At the same time, while ATT is FINALLY joining the android revolution, don't expect them to really push the platform until the iphone is non exclusive (looking to be sometime this year) The iphone is their cash cow, and they want to get as many people pulled in for it as possible.

I just realized something, voice & data only work simultaneously on 3G, not EDGE, oooh that sucks!!!! So if I do take the N1 plundge, it'll have to be with Tmo. Perhaps I'll wait a while to see what HTC devices come to ATT. But that Nexus One is one heck of a beast of a phone!!!!!!!

Question: If voice & data work simutaneously on a 3G network, would that mean that it can work on t-mobile's 3G network? I ask because i have not seen any tv ads boast about that feature like the way AT&T does.

That's because TMo really has no beef with competitors yet and AT&T flipped out when they saw VZW's map commercials. Not mention they tried suing them because they claimed the commercials were unclear and people were thinking the maps represented basic service not 3G. So, in an effort to maintain their customer base as well as gain new customers, they are trying to take multiple stabs at VZW using a washed up actor. I work for a VZW retailer and as I see it, their efforts aren't paying off as well as they'd like considering the amount of port-in's I handle weekly. I have no beef with AT&T as I was with cingular for some time, just to clear that up! 🙂

umm....that kinda didnt answer my question 🙂

Maybe i didn't clarify somewhere (my apologies for that). My original question was, since AT&T's 3G network allows for voice & data at the same time, does T-Mobile's 3G network have that same capability.

If so, I feel, that the Nexus One truly will be the next big thing.

If not, well....I still like the Nexus One. 😁

Yes, gsm 3g allows this feature, it's not some special thing that ATT only provides.

att is boasting about the feature because they are running out of things to boast about.

they basically are down to 1. we have the iphone 2. this is what having 3g gsm means.

T-Mobile does not use the same 3G band in the US as the European standard. The reason for no AT&T 3G love is that AT&T uses 1900mhz for 3G and T-Mobile uses 1700mhz. So, they have to pick one or the other. T-Mobile has been nice to Android and google, so they get the best phone on the market... as well, At&T was approached by Google, and they basically told google to get lost.

The guy on XDA-Devs that leaked the photos of the device before anyone else said this... I am pretty sure he is a reliable source of true information, to say the least.

As well, it is now become clear that AT&T will eventually get the device, likely Q2 it sounds like.

There is a rumor they are developing a kb version of this phone, it would be nice if it had NAM 3g.

Hey Versed, what do you mean by a "kb version"?

What would be nice is a phone with the exact same specs as the Nexus One with a slide-out keyboard!

They are going to be making an AT&T version eventually, at least Google wants to, it is up to AT&T to green light it in the end. With Verizon getting it, T-Mobile already has it, Sprint wants it and likely will get it, it is going to be really hard for AT&T not to carry this phone.

As it stands, the only reason they don't have Android devices is because of the iPhone, which is dumb IMHO. AT&T needs to get on Android ASAP, or they are going to be in a big hole when they lose their iPhone exclusive contract (rumored to be this year).

As for a keyboard version, every G1 owner is waiting for that day. There are some rumors, but the leaked HTC roadmap at this point doesn't have any promising devices on it to be that phone. However, it w...

Not so much about the Nexus One, but AT&T basically ignored the Open Handset Alliance, of which TMO and Sprint didn't and joined.

I'm sure things will change, if AT&T wants a killer Android phone, just like what happened with VZW and the Moto-Droid, believe me, HTC, Motorola or whomever will provide one for them. They are a large 85 million plus carriers and for the most part can get what they want.

See, I thought that a carrier had to be a member of the OHA in order to be able to carry an Android handset.

But appearently not.

Not true. T-Mobile USA uses the 1700 band, AKA "AWS". Europe uses the 2100 band. They're different and not compatible.

Confusingly, some people call the AWS band "1700/2100", but don't take that to mean it's related to the "2100" band they use in Europe. They're different.

The Nexus One does support 2100, but that's extra support added by HTC. Many T-Mobile 3G phones will not work on 3G networks in Europe.

I thought they do work in Europe as long as they are Tri-band 3G. Unless you mean the phone that T-Mobile sells that only have Quad-band 2G + HSPA 1700.

I'm just saying that T-Mobile USA doesn't use the same band for 3G as they do in Europe. That was the assertion I was correcting.

Therefore, yes, a phone needs to be at least dual-band 3G (and the correct two bands) in order to get 3G service with T-Mobile USA and in Europe.

T-Mobile USA does sell plenty of single-band 3G phones that will not get 3G service in Europe. For example, many of the Samsung 3G phones sold by T-Mobile USA do not support 3G in Europe.

Certainly seems like it would be more efficient if Tmo
USA/Europe had dual band 1700/2100 3G for cheaper data roaming.

Do you mean the networks, or the phones?

Many of T-Mobile's phones are dual- or tri-band 3G and therefore can use 3G in Europe. My point was that nowhere near all of them are; plenty are single-band 3G.

There are always efforts to "harmonize" the bands worldwide, but it's next to impossible. There are very good reasons why different countries end up using different bands. That will always be the case. T-Mobile had zero choice about using the 1700 band for its US 3G network; it was 1700 or nothing.

I'm not sure what you mean by cheaper roaming. Most T-Mobile phones are at least quad-band GSM now, so you can roam (including data) in most countries, it just won't be at 3G speeds because those single-band phones don't support any...

Ah I just thought that if both Tmo Europe & Tmo stateside had all the same 3G phone that data roaming would be easier & cheaper.

? For you: MWC is next month right? Are you going to be there representing us? And if so, do you think theres any chance that HTC will give us a peak at what Android handset they are making for ATT? I'm very eager to find out.

Menno,
Actually TMO uses the AWS band, 1700/2100, and the 2100 side is slightly off euro spec. Which is a shame.
