Will the data run off of iDEN too, or Sprint? If it's a full iDEN phone, will it be extremely slow like all Nextel data?

i work for sprint but ive never heard anything about nextels data being slow. i thought it would be just like sprints and i dont see why it would be different. if it does run off sprints then it will be fine.

if you REALLY worked for Sprint you would know that Sprint runs on the CDMA network as does Verizon, much faster data speeds than NExtels IDEN network, two COMPLETELY different technologies. And Nextels data is horribly slow.

yes i do know difference between iden and cdma but we dont do anything on the nextel side so i dont no anything about there data 😕

Yeah, the IDEN data is terribly slow and this phone will be no exception.

The fact that it is our first touch screen phone with push to talk (and it's rugged) should make it fairly popular. I'd guess 199.99 after rebate with two year agreement.

yes the IDEN is slow but... where I am (Florida keys) nextel has the best coverage. so its nextel or droped calls and no service on all other carriers! I am awaiting the release so I can do away with my blackberry... if the price is $199.00 that would be very fair.

Well, I DO work for sprint, and I DO have a NEXTEL phone. And Nextel's data isn't as slow as you think. True iDEN is 19.2 KB/s (Think Dialup). But all the NEW iDEN phones are actually WiDEN (Wideband iDEN) and their data is nearly 5 times faster than traditional iDEN network speeds. Sure, it's not '3G', it qualifies as 2.5 network. I have sat there with my motorola Clutch (Which I run opera on) and with a Sprint CDMA 3G phone (Samsung Exclaim to be exact) and googled things and yes, CDMA's 3G is faster. But if you compare it to a 2.5G messaging phone such as an LG Rumor 2, it's bang on. Also consider 95% of GSM coverage in the US isn't 3G either. Frankly I can't wait to get an i1. Umm where are you getting your information from? WiDEN is NOT active, Sprint has made no secret of that. WiDEN has not been active on the NEXTEL National Network since October 2005 when rebanding efforts in the 800 MHz band began in a Sprint effort to utilize those data channels as a way to handle more cellular phone call traffic on the NEXTEL iDEN network. To this date, WiDEN has not been restored.

And as for speed, iden peaks at 19.2kbps average around 13kbps.
WiDEN on the other hand peaks at 100kbps averages around 60kbps, and that is from real world testing.

And it is because of those speeds this phone has WiFi and Opera Mini, because think about it. With all the features Android 1.5 has, it would be suicidally slow to strictly ...

who cares .wifi is so much faster and it is available in so many places library ,airports, McDonald's, star-bucks add some are FREE. you can stream videos on wifi beater than Opera Mini don't get me wrong it is grate when you don't have access to wifi. but i hope it comes to boost mobile network to.

The data piece is also iDEN, so yes, data connections will be limited to the relatively little bandwidth that iDEN can provide. They're trying to mitigate that by including the Opera Mini browser, which compresses data on the server end before sending it to your phone, and also by including WiFi.

the I1 should be a nice phone but i think the dc is taking up too much space so they should make the phone bigger to allow a bigger OS

The Blackberry phones are whats called a PowerSource phone - meaning it uses Sprints CDMA voice & data but uses Nextels iDen for DC ONLY! This allows for the faster internet & larger voice footprint, but if the DC argument is true, the battery life here wouldnt make sense!? *Shrugs*

This is a common misunderstanding. Both the 7100i and the 8350i use iDEN for voice and data. They run on the iDEN 800 frequency. A powersource phone would be like the ic902, it has both iDEN and CDMA radios in it. Giving you coverage for both networks (PTT for Nextel and voice/Data for Sprint.

The reason that most Androids have such low battery life is that Android OS is fairly bulky and there's not a native provision for shutting down apps running in the background (task manager). Install one from the Market though and you should see an increase in bettery life. The reason that RIM products have such a large battery life, even running on IDEN, is that BB OS has always been a very lean program. That's also why RIM can get away with not using 1Ghz processors and still get snappy response with few lags or software loops.

When I used a T-Mobile Blackberry, I was always amazed at the excellent battery life it gave.

Kudos to RIM for keeping their OS as tight and efficient as they have.

Boos & hisses to Apple, Google, Microsoft and all of the "biggies" who continuously churn out their bloated, inefficient OS's and apps. If any company should be able to produce highly efficient OS's and apps, it is any and all of the "biggies" because they have the most money and engineering resources to get it right. It is sheer laziness and greed on their parts that produces these hoglike apps and OS's that drain batteries like mad.

Again, kudos to RIM's engineers and management that keeps their products efficient.
