Samsung Captivate (Galaxy S)
Random shutdowns

If you are within the first 30 days then you should be able to return it for a brand new one for free. Not 100% sure but it would surprise me if it werent. Act quick before time runs out.
The problem is, even though this is a very widespread problem Samsung seems to be totally unaware of it. Would exchanging the phone through Amazon guarantee that this problem would never happen again? Samsung's tech support reps barely speak english and AT&T seems reluctant to do a warranty replacement on the phone itself because the shutdowns are random with no predictable pattern, although they do only happen when the phone is asleep and they happen on a daily basis.
I called AT&T customer service to report the problem, and they sent me a new battery, although they pretty much admitted they didn't know the root cause. I did have the choice of another phone, but it wouldn't have been a brand new one.
Since I replaced the battery, it hasn't shut down once, and it's been a few weeks now, knock on wood.
I got my captivate last week and it started shutting off yesterday. Very frustrating since I use it for work and it is my main means of communication.
I'm guessing "froyo" won't fix the issue, it would need to be a firmware update?
