Rooting is easy, very easy even by Android standards. Then download Titanium backup and remove the bloat. And if you want, download the sql editor and change a file to allow off market apps. (sideloading).

As far as filtered AT&T apps on the market, two ways of dealing with this, both simple. 1. put the phone in airplane mode, then turn wifi on. You can get at any app in the marketplace. This is what I do. 2. Download marketenabler, pick TMO USA, the market will think you're on TMO and not AT&T, both are good. I use 1.

Apps auto-running

Why is it that every time I bring up 'App Killer' it shows that the Messaging widget is running? Sometimes the Clock widget is running also.

How can I get these services to stop starting up in the background?

CNET Review is up

4 out of 5 stars

The good: The Samsung Captivate features a gorgeous Super AMOLED screen, a 1GHz processor, and 16GB of onboard memory plus an expansion slot. The Android 2.1 device also offers great call quality, full wireless options, and a HD video capture.

The bad: AT&T won't let you sideload apps. Camera lacks flash.

The bottom line: The Samsung Captivate is easily AT&T's best Android offering to date, delivering great performance, tons of features, and an easy-to-use interface.

Very much looking forward to this phone!!!

I am super excited to finally being able to jump onto a full powered Android phone. I 'upgraded' to the BackFlip a few months ago but returned it a few weeks later. Back then I didn't really know much about the Android OS, my upgrade was pretty spontaneous, but I somehow knew there was something missing about the OS. It just didnt feel 'right'.

But I have been looking forward to this phone for about 2 months now.

Here's my question:

Anyone see any obvious limitations or negative features about this phone???

Personally I wish it had the keyboard like the Sprint version and I wish is had a damn flash for the camera. Seems pretty easy to have this basic feature on a phone.

To change the bottom 4 icons is easy

Just a slight addition to your review
To change the bottom 4 icons on the main screen

Go to the applications list menu, hit the menu/options button, then edit- then you can change them 🙂
Its a bit difficult to get it to be as customized as you want, but it can be done- haha

Very difficult question about the phone and android.

My 3gs is currently not working and while I wait for a new screen and flex cables to fix it, I am going to upgrade to this phone, IF it works as I think. I have heard the bloatware is awful and plentyful. I am planning on rooting this phone, Once I do that can this run clean android, not At&t's android plus extras? thanks again.

Flash player?

I currently have an HTC Aria, and am able to play a majority of flash content on websites. Anyone know if the Captivate also has flash capabilities with 2.1 or will flash be an update when 2.2 is released on this phone. Been looking everywhere for an answer but all that I come up with is that it has an android "webkit" browser.

Thanks in advance.

Trouble with Yahoo mail

For some reason I can not get my yahoo e-mail to work with the e-mail app on the captivate. I was wondering if anybody knows how to make this work. I know there is an yahoo mail app but I would just like to use the one on the phone.

The problem that I am having is that it keeps saying that user name and or password is inncorrect but it's really not. Just wondering if anybody else was having this problem.

When will the samsung epic 4g be released?

Since the Samsung Vibrant and Captivate will be released all within a week from now? When will Sprint release the Samsung Epic 4g? I would like to know the full specs so I could have something comparable to the HTC Evo.

Camera Question

No flash, so does anyone know how it performs taking night pictures? I seen in the specs that it has ISO control, which I know helps out with lighting conditions. Any info would be appreciated.

Fast way to toggle swype/regular keyboard?

i enjoy using swype for texting, but have a hard time using it in the browser. is there a way to customize it so i can default swype for just texting, and use the regular keyboard in the browser, or is there a faster way to toggle them besides going into settings and changing the default keyboard.

connecting to PC??

i just got this phone 2 days ago, and have had a really hard time connecting it to my PC. There was no software in the box, so i figured it would be read as an external hard-drive, but nothing popped up when i connected it.

After some research, i downloaded Kies, but once I got it running, it said an update was available and then the update took 10 hours to finish and i had to go to work.

Any hints/suggestions???

Website error?

I'm not sure if there is an issue with the premier web sight or what, but I was just able to buy a captivate with NO COMMITMENT at $200. I thought it was an error, so I checked the price for my one line that is eligible for an upgrade and it had the Captivate for $199.99. Not sure why it was so cheap, but I just ordered one, anybody interested in the Captivate might want to check that out. I'm also interested to see if anybody else gets the same price at no commitment.

Sync With Laptop

Hey people,

I am having an issue when I go to hook up my phone via the USB cable it came with to my laptop. I am running windows 7 and when it tries to install the driver or hardware needed on my laptop it says that it has fail.. I have tried this about five times now with the same result in the end. I would like to be able to sync them up and use my internal phone memory as well.. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks

Do I have to download it? Or do I need to update software to get it? I played with swype in the store, but when I got my phone home it was not on the phone.

I would just like to point two things out

They compared the Vibrant to the obvious device, the iPhone; and that I get. But why not this phone, Am I the only person who finds this phone to be SPOT on for a Blackberry Storm clone? Same screen, same back, hell...the buttons might as well be the same.

Samsung, you clever devil.

LOL, it's the SAME Review........

Read the Wrap-Up sections from this review and T-Mobile's Vibrant. It's almost word-for-word the exact review........... 😉
