Antivirus?

I was curious about other peoples comments since various versions of the Droid have been out for a while.

I have seen countless apps in the Market that provide anti virus protection, one (lockout) by Verizon themselves. Yes, I understand the purpose of these programs being in the IT field. However, I have to ask is anyone using them? I guess the answer might be yes. But the reason for this post is to ask why?

It's very possible I am missing something since I know little about the Android operating system. But thus far I have heard of no infections or attempts to infect a "phone". Nor do I know if it's even possible. I am guessing yes it's possible like most things if people want to me mischievous and are determined.

Any c...

I suppose first of all, it depends to some degree what you mean by an "infected" phone. Certainly there have been cases of phones being infected with a virus; given Verizon's near-ubiquitous use of Java and Brew, it's really inevitable. There have even been specific cases of apps which have been removed from the market because they are sending potentially personal information places.

It's much more significant, of course, with a phone like the Droid line, because as smart phones, they are far more likely to have more personal information, which also tends to make them more of a target. On the other hand, of course, you have the consideration that because Android is built on Linux, it is inherently much more secure than many other phone...

Mupi, thanks for your reply. You bring up some very good points in your response. With smartphones becoming more advanced you can understand how these will eventually become a target. I am sure it's inevitable they will be be "attacked" at a later point. Right now I don't see them as a big target for many of the malicious code writers. Similar to the Macs in the world. Sure there are virus but how do they compare to the attacks that are launched against Windows systems. The number difference is staggering. Why, simply because the MAC is not as big of a target and news worthy as Windows is.

Similar to a Droid/Smartphone attack. Sure you may be successful in getting some info from those who have it. But again your target audience...

I agree with most of what you said, but I have to quibble with this point. this is a recurring theme among windows/Microsoft supporters, and it is simply not true.

The reality is that there are more viruses for Windows because there are more vulnerabilities in windows than in other operating systems, especially Linux. This can be easily proved if you consider the number of servers, a large majority of which do NOT run...
