Does this phone support data? (Act as a modem?)

Hi folks,

I work for an ISP, so I have a free dialup account (yay) but unfortunately am on call every few weeks (boo). So, I like to keep a laptop on me with a cell phone that is data enabled.
My cingular contract is up at the end of January, and I've been with them for 2 years, with an Ericsson R278d. (In NY, also). Thinking of upgrading to a new phone and switching over to the GSM network from the TDMA. My wife wants a Motorola T720. I've chosen this phone as mine, but no stores carry it yet.
My question is: does this support data? The info tab here says "supports fax". Looking at the user's manual on LG's site, looks like there's an infrared port, and you can communicate with a PC via a standard Irda port. (Which can ...

I work for Cingular, and I would NOT recommend the T720 to anyone I liked ... I very often have calls regarding this phone NOT working properly, especially WIX (wireless internet).

OTOH, you CAN get a data connect kit for it, which you will want if you are going to hook your laptop to the internet through the phone. BTW, it will NOT be using your cell's minutes, it will be using your cell's WIX or data connection, which is billed by the kilobyte. This is true for all the GSM-type phones. (Unless, of course, you're in an area with no GPRS service, (no "G" on phone's display) in which case it will drop back to the old WAP or air-time method of connection, which is about like a 9.6k modem. Yes, I said nine-point-six-kay, knowing a "slow"...

Bob,

Thanks for the reply. I've found out everything you've mentioned. I too found the russian site with the software. I also loaded IrComm2k to turn my usb-irda dongle into a com port... so I can speak to the phone as a modem. I've also got it to connect at 9600 (as you mentioned). I work for an ISP so my account is free. I found some other pages about GSM-specific AT commands... still no luck. These are mostly linux pages, so I'm considering compiling irda support into my kernels and really getting down and dirty and finding out how they work. I've seen other sites mentioning the ability to make ISDN calls with it (as we have an ISDN modem bank, I've tried it ... can connect successfully, but only at 9600).

I haven't been ...
