I've seen a lot of misinformation on this floating around. The Thunderbolt (and all 4G LTE phones for years to come) have multiple radios, one for LTE-4G and one for CDMA. Where LTE is available, you will be able to talk and surf just fine. While 4G is an all-ip technology, Verizon will continue to use the CDMA network for voice at least initially.
For those who don't live in areas covered by LTE, or when you can't pick up LTE signal for any reason, you will be on 3G/CDMA and it will then work like any other Verizon smartphone! And who knows how well the Thunderbolt will be implemented with 3G fallback. For example, if you are on the internet and move out of range on LTE, will the connection stay open? What if you are on the phone when y...

Accually I work for verizon and the thunderbolt will be able to talk and do data on 3g and 4g because of the dual processing intena and im 5000000% sure of it

I don't care who you work for.
Unless Tbolt has 2 CDMA radios (which is possible, we already know there's 2 radios to begin with), then when you go into a 3G area, you're going to have a problem. End of story. Dual "intena" or not. (and we already knew it had a dual antenna, since CDMA and LTE are different frequencies)

* The ThunderBolt will allow customers in a 4G coverage area to simultaneously use voice and data services. While it’s possible this simultaneous voice/data use may be available in some 3G areas, the experience will not be up to Verizon’s high standards and should not be promoted.
straight from corporate emailing. so it does just not as well

I think you missed the most important words in that email: "it's possible this...use may be available in some 3G areas..."
In other words, it might work, but it might not, nobody is going to make any promises about whether it will or will not work in any given area, and even if it does, nobody is going to make any guarantees of the quality of the result.
Once again (maybe read this more slowly, it might sink in) unless there are two 3G radios (or the 4G radio can "fall back" to 3G, thus giving you two 3G radios at the same time), or they are doing something VOIP, or VOIP-ish, then it simply isn't technically possible. I wouldn't put it past HTC to put a dedicated VOIP in there, and to have some arrangement with Ve...

Well either way you put it it does not change the fact that there is endless reviews saying it works on 3g too from people who bought the phone. I sold one to my dad it also works on 3g for him. I cant explain in detail how it works to make you belive that but read reviews or buy it and youll see it does

The only people qualified to answer this definitively are those of us who own the phone and have experienced surfing and talking while on 3G. I have. It works (in my area north of Baltimore which is only 3G). End of story.

Many of us here work in the Wireless Communication/Technology and understand what makes things work. We also watch technology and company product offerings for a living. Trust me.... Verizon tells its employees exactly what it wants people to upsell the latest and greatest.
The dual "intenna" (which I assume is a Verizonism for "dual internal antenna") is required for any 3G/4G phone. This is because Verizon's LTE frequencies are in the 700mhz band (UHF TV spectrum taken from the public by the FCC and sold off to ATT & Verizon for billions). The frequency and LTE signal are quite incompatible, so until there is enough 4G LTE coverage verizon will be selling dual band, dual radio devices for a long time.
The LTE radio won't work on 3G...

Acually, I work for Verizon as well.
The ability to use data while making a call is enabled by the 4G network. If you are not in a 4G area, it will not work. If you do pick up a 4G signal as they are continuing to develoop in 3G areas, the ability to use data while on the phone is weak and should not be relied on.
While Verizon has more 4G markets than any other carrier, including airports in major cities, it is not everywhere. I am lucky enough to live in a 4G market, anywhere else it's sold customers should not expect to use both functions simultaneously.

Actually I am not in a 4G area and I can talk and surf in 3G soooooo yea.....

WOW so much mis-information in the phonescoop forums. VZW Wireless completed an update to it's entire 3g network at the end of 2010. The tech is called SVDO, see the link below for details(slide 16)http://www.qualcomm.com/common/documents/p resentations/What_is_next_for_CDMA_ppt.pdf
This is the tech that allows the thunderbolt to talk and surf at the same time on a 3g network. It is one of the very first handsets to support SVDO. All phones with the qualcomm's latest EVDO chipset should support this feature, but that also doesn't mean every phone coming out is capable of it. Look at the iphone 4 it still only supports EVDO since its using a last gen chipset.

I have the thunderbolt in a 3g only area (though our airport has 4g coverage, but I'm not near it) and I can talk and surf at the same time without a problem...it's actually the reason I won't be returning the phone (I like my droix x widgets better, but I like being able to talk and surf more).
So...not sure where you're getting your information, but it's wrong.
...
I believe this is how it's meant to be interpreted...Perhaps it means this. You can talk and surf at the same time in 4G. If you drop to 3g there is no way to reclaim your current connection back to 4G. However you can talk 3G and surf with WiFi. So the question now becomes "How nice does 4G and WiFi play together?"
...
Troll much? I have the TB and i can confirm that you are able to use voice/data at the same time on 3G. End of story, go troll somewhere else.

Talk about misinformation....simultaneous voice/data works without a 4G connection. I have to travel over 20 miles from my home to reach any type of 4G reception. Simultaneous voice/data works flawlessly from my home....3G only.....no 4G.

My Thunderbolt and I live in an area only covered by 3G. I can talk and surf the web at the same time. I use it as a hotspot here at home and I can talk while doing so. Facebook, Twitter, you name it.
