A phone like this becoming obsolete will only happen in two years' time - at the soonest - at which point you'll probably be shopping for a new phone anyway, and enjoying a discounted contract-renewal price.
Remember that nothing at all will happen for 12 months. That's how long they will remain 100% separate companies. After that, they've announced that they will "dual-band" most of their towers, meaning WCDMA 1700 coverage will actually increase at first, and phones like this will work better than ever.
Eventually they will phase out WCDMA 1700, but only after the companies have merged and they've stopped selling WCDMA 1700 phones for a year or two.

I thought ATT intends to use Tmo's 1700 band for dual-mode LTE? 700/1700 LTE. Wasn't there a headline right here on Phone Scoop saying just that?

I'm kinda curious of exactly what all the spectral benefits of ATT's spectrum AND T-Mobile's spectrum being combined will be like.
I know some things about spectrum and radio technology, but not quite that much. But I am very, very curious what a 700/1700 LTE network will look like. With Tmo's 42mbps HSPA+ combined with ATT's 700mhz LTE, I wonder how high the speeds will get? Real world end-user speeds of course.

In terms of radio spectrum, 700 vs. 1700 will be sort of like the difference between 850 and 1900 in today's 2G networks.
However, the big difference is that AT&T-Mobile will have 1700 nationwide, supplemented by 700 in the cities. It's usually the other way around (relying more on the lower band in less-dense areas, since lower bands reach farther.)
In terms of HSPA+ vs. LTE, AT&T seems to care more about LTE. Having HSPA+ won't speed up LTE, of course, it will just be nice fall-back when LTE isn't available. Although it's not clear that AT&T will "keep" T-Mobile's HSPA+ intact end-to-end, as opposed to just folding various T-Mobile towers into AT&T's network.

When Tmo's towers are integrated into ATT's network that will include Tmo's HSPA+ network, I don't see why it wouldn't.

Btw Rich, I know this isn't related, but during both CES & CTIA, AND Mobile World Congress, I don't recall seeing any smartphones announced for Verizon's LTE network with slideout qwerty smartphones. Were there? I qualify for an equipment upgrade this coming November, and as far as I know most of the smartphones announced seem to be launching in the first half of this year, and the summer, I don't think any smartphones were announced for the 2nd half of this year, as of yet. Have there?
I want a smartphone with a dual-core processor, either 3.7 or 4 inch display,...

I'm not aware of the 1700 band being significantly better than the 1900 band.
Verizon announced their initial LTE phone lineup at CES, and those phones have just started hitting the market (Thunderbolt.) The Revolution, i510, and Droid Bionic have yet to hit the market. Therefore it's a little premature for Verizon to announce additional LTE phones. In a few months, perhaps.

Hey Rich, I really, really want my next smartphone to have a screen tech that is bright, colorful, and efficient like Samsung's Super AMOLED tech, but I am very happy with my LG Ally thus far, and I just found out that LG has a screen tech that is just as bright and colorful as Samsung's Super AMOLED tech, but 50% more energy efficient, LG calls there's "NOVA".
So,...I'm hoping perhaps LG will come out with a follow-up smartphone to the Ally with newer specs like dual-core processors and NFC tech, with the addition of one of their NOVA screens, with a qwerty slideout keyboard of course, and running on Vzn's LTE network.

I've seen LG's Nova display on the Optimus Black phone. I wasn't impressed. It's nice, but not nearly as nice as Super AMOLED Plus.

Oh!. . .well,...over all specs should be taken into consideration. So whether it's Samsung's Super AMOLED Plus, Sony's Super LCD, or LG's NOVA tech, I will just wait to see who comes out with what in the 3rd/4th qtr timeframe, and take all specs into consideration.

Exactly. We'll probably be using LTE by then anyway and AT&T has spectrum for that in 700Mhz and who knows maybe they'll have pentaband phones to future proof

Well, the whole issue is precisely that AT&T wants T-Mobile for its AWS (1700) spectrum, to deploy LTE in that band.
AT&T's plan IS to shut down WCDMA 1700 to make room for LTE.
But it will happen over time. If they do transition on a super-aggressive schedule, they will (have to) give people some very nice discounts as part of the deal. Basically, if they make you switch to a WCDMA 850/1900 phone before you're ready, you'll probably get the new phone for free.
