I'm confused. I just got the V505 on the ATT wireless...Amazon - rebates etc give you a whopping $150 BACK! BUT, I assumed that voice dial was a feature of the phone. But when I attempt to record a name

Press Voice Key and then say name
I press the button on the right side of the phone and get NOTHING...It does not record.
Only option is CANCEL.
I called ATT- now Cingular today and was told that my plan - ATT National Rate $39.99 - does not include Voice Dial and I have to subscribe to their Voice Dial service for $3.99 a month.
My previous 3 phones have all had voice dial on the phone and did not require this.
Is anybody actually using the voice dial on the phone with a...

It sounds like your phone may be defective, you do not have to subscribe to the voicedialing feature through att, that is an entirely different feature, mainly good for those who DO NOT have voicedialing built into their phone as a standard feature, as you do. I use the v505 and the voice dial w/ out the paid feature. I also work for att (now cingular) and KNOW that if your phone is built w/ the feature into it, you do NOT have to pay for the feature.
The steps you described taking are exactly correct, by pushing that you should be prompted to record and then re-record. It sounds like a faulty phone, BUT since you did get it from a dealer, not through att directly... Att can't help, as far as replacements or anything like that, you have to ...

Indeed, this feature should be built into your phone. After being prompted to record the name, do you press and release the button on the right side of your phone as you are facing it? The key phrase is to release the button then record.

Ah! LEN! You are right...I was holding down the button which is how my older phone worked. When I just pressed and released it quickly, it did indeed record! DUH! This is not the first time I've felt like a moron in today's new world of electronics and I'm sure it won't be the last. Thanks so much!!!!
Now about the sim card - Do you by any chance know if the 505 phone can be used with Cingular by replacing the sim card? Does each company that uses GSM have a different size sim card so you have to buy a whole new phone for their service?
...
First off, don't feel like a moron. The functions, except for the easiest like dialing and receiving a call, are about as clear as mud. Besides, my wife was doing the same thing that you were. The best way to learn all the functions of this phone is to play with it, which I've been doing. Try figuring out bluetoothing a picture or ringtone to another bluetooth phone. Instead of the menu saying send file, you have to select copy (very wierd).
As to your question about the sim card, I don't know. Just dial 611 on your v505, go to support, put your phone on speaker phone and sit there for about ten minutes before someone answers. Ask them the question about the sim card, but in my opinion, you have about a 50% chance in getting the correct an...

I just talked to a very competent AT&T/Cingular tech to learn how to email pictures (I've read that you can't email pictures with the V505, but indeed you can), so I also asked her about your sim card question. It seems that the V505 sim card will only work on another AT&T phone. If you can get the v505 "unlocked", you can use a Cingular sim card. If you want to change over to a Cingular Plan and do not want to or you're not able to get the v505 unlocked, you have to buy a Cingular phone.

In that case would it be wise to start a contract with cingular and get a free phone then take the sim card out of the new phone and put it in the v505?
...
I believe that only an AT&T sim card will work on the v505. As I said before, the v505 would have to be unlocked before it will work with another sim card. Talk to a local cellular retailer to see if anyone in your area unlocks cell phones. This can also be done by sending your phone to an "unlocker". You can find them on the internet. Also, I believe that different phones have different sized sim cards, so be careful.
Good Luck,

Okay, lets clear this up.
I work for Cingular (Former ATT Rep)
The way it works with the sim cards is that each GSM provider (att, cingular, tmobile) their phones are locked to only read their branded sim cards. Even though ATT/Cingular are one company, our devices/sim cards are not interchangeable.
Since the merge with ATT, Cingular has been working on what is called the "ALLOVER" network. By Mid 2006, this network will be the true combination of both companie's GSM networks. The only way to use this new network is to be on a Cingular plan with a 64K sim card. Now for former ATT customer's who haven't switched over, you are required to get a new phone in order to use this network. This applies to all of you TDMA customer's still ...

For the phone based voice dialing to work your phonebook must be stored in the phone memory and not the SIM card. Per the manual, voice dialing does not work if you store your phone book on the SIM card.
