From start screen tap the phone icon.
Scroll to the left to speed dial.
Add who you want.
From then on tapping the phone icon brings you to the list. It isn't press a number speed dial. Since you have to take another tap to bring up the keypad this seems to be quicker. Also, the contact photos are helpful.
