It is possible but like many things on this phone it's quirky. If you're phone is in standby (the external display is either off or showing the ugly clock) you have to first take it out of standby by either pressing one of the external buttons or by opening and closing the phone. Once you've done that, keep the phone closed and press and hold the external camera button for about 2-3 seconds. The external display will now be acting as the viewfinder. Press the external camera button again to snap a picture or start and stop the video. You can also use the +/- buttons in this mode to zoom in and out.
