Motorola A840
I've had mine and the phone keeps frying out on me!
I don't know what the deal is with charging batteries and this phone or if its the adapter or what but this phone is bound to fry out when charging. I am on my third one right now going on my fourth just by chance Verizon called and said they are sending a new one out. What happens to me is when charging the battery meter freezes up and the battery gets red hot the plastic back door gets so hot you can actually ply the plastic into a different position and than the metal inside is steaming hot as well. Than i go to turn on the phone and it says invalid time/date reset and it gives me a option of yes or no but there is no problem with the time or date on the phone. I just got mine but, they can't seem to activate it. They said that they needed a sim card to activate the phone. Do you know if you can activate the phone for just CDMA??

Yes you need the Verizon SIM card to activate the phone it should of came right in the package if ordered through Verizon if not you need to call them and arrange to get one it should be free with the phone if not they cost $29.99. Verizon uses their own SIM cards its a security measure from my understanding more less a pain but what can you do? Global Tech Support will have to activate the SIM card for you as well. You might be able to go into a store and possibly have one ordered for you and explain your situation if you ordered it through Verizon and never received a SIM card they should send you out one for free.

Actually, you don't need a sim card to activate the phone. I'm using mine right now without a sim card.

You don't but if you do travels and stuff its a Vodaphone i believe its called. If you look in phones like the V710 and so forth there are slots for the SIM Card but there is no reason to have the SIM card in those phones Verizon says. Verizon only uses them in global phones.

I had a Motorola A840 in Europe last year and had to keep re-booting it; in other words, it was no good and I returned it. Now I'm going to Europe again and the only two GSM phones Verizon sells are this one or a Samsung A795. I don't know whether to give the A840 another try, or the Samsung.
Alternatively, I could buy a phone from Mobal for 49.99 or 99.99 - either a Motorola C117 or Nokia 3120--and just pay for usage.
Any advise on which one to pick?
