Switching over to Sprint & wondering if there's a preferred model to use on their network. I mainly want to make sure I can use my phone overseas w/ a local SIM card.

I was thinking that, but Apple's website says the unlocked model won't work on Sprint, which makes no sense? Or is there something I'm missing?

this is not true. sorry

sprint does allow global roaming through their own version called sprint global roaming. link is here http://www.sprint.com/landings/international- value-roaming/ but i can only assume it uses edge or 1x, not sufficent for voip but if you do wifi calling, it may be possible to do free calling.

the other choice is getting a cheap temporary phone that you can get unlimited texts with global roaming and then use the cheap unlocked phone with the countries sim to call them back.

when I got the iphone 6s plus for my wife, the apple sale rep told the unlocked version can go to any carrier. Since you want to use a local sim card,,, it has to be unlocked. Have fun!

Sprint uses bands 25, 26, and 41 for its LTE network. You need all three for the full "Sprint Spark" network. I strongly recommend a phone with all three of those bands, otherwise you might get very poor LTE coverage and/or speeds.

A1723 is the only model with LTE 41. That's the Sprint version. You should get that one. It has all of the other bands you need for decent global roaming.

Whether you can get it unlocked for local SIM cards is something to take up with Sprint. Their unlocking policy is here:
