I had the same problem. So, I returned it. They told me they were going to get someone to "look into it" and call me.

I just got one. If you purchase the unlocked version from a EB Games, Game Stop, etc. it will not come with IM on it. I sell T-Mobile and it does not come with it either, but a Cingular rep friend of mine tells me you can dload it from a website or use AIM Express.

allaboutsymbian.com should have AIM for the n-gage. They also have a ton of other programs for the phone.
Just in case you didn't know. Symbian is the operating system the phone uses. If you want to know more do a google search on symbian. There are many programs and hacks to do everything from turning your n-gage into a T.V. remote control to putting the web browser Opera on it. Even emulating a Gameboy Advance and playing GA games on your phone.
