I bought the card reader and the data cable from the Samsung website but neither allow uploading of mp3's. Has anyone else been able to master this? I'm running windows xp on a new Dell laptop. I've also tried on my other two desktops without luck.

When I had this phone, I put the mp3's on the rs-mmc card via the card reader, then put the card in the phone, and then made sure the mp3 player on the phone is set to read the mp3's off the card. I don't remember the exact way to do this, but it was in the options of the mp3 player, and very obvious.
When you load the mp3's onto the card, make sure you put them in the proper folder. The card that came with the phone had 3 folders on it. Make sure to create these 3 folders on your new card, if you purchased a larger one.

Yup, did all that. Even talked to Samsung customer service and they couldn't help me. They did however talk me through some options with the data cable that finally succeeded in loading mp3's to the RS-MMC. They seem to think there is a problem with Dell, although my Gateway and Micron PC's had the same problem. If anyone else is having trouble uploading, contact me for a possible solution that isn't in the lame help file. (Data cable only)

So, you can't upload mp3's to the rs-mmc card, or you can't read mp3's off the card once you put the card into the phone?
...
Cant read mp3's off the card. Despite the mp3's being loaded to my computer hard drive identically, then uploaded to the rs-mmc, most of the mp3's will not play on the phone due to "unrecognized file format". THe bit rate and file size doesn't seem to be a common factor.
...
stupid question, but is the file extension .mp3?
not all music files are mp3s...it could be .wav, .wmv, or anything else
...
No stupid questions, I appreciate your interest. Yes they are mp3's. I copied a CD to my hard drive in mp3 format, then uploaded them to my card then placed the card in my phone. Three of the songs played succesfully, the remainder of them said unrecognized file format and would not play. When I put the card back into the card reader, all the songs appear as I originally loaded them. It's just frustrating because there seems to be no common theme. Anyway, T-mobile has agreed to switch the phone for a new one, we'll see how it works.

How long are the names to the songs? I had that problem before. If there are too many characters in the name of the song... like if you put the name of the song and then the name of the artist, it won't play.

I knew you would ask that, lol thanks very much for all your concern. Yes, the Samsung support person warned me about that. All the files have less than 8 characters in their titles. Word today is that T-mobile will in fact not issue me a new handset but I may be eligible for a returned/reserviced handset pending further managerial decisions. I don't mind really; so long as it works properly. The card reader absolutely doesn't work at all now. Total waste of that $70. The data cable is still hit and miss, still loading about 40% of my mp3 selections. Better than nothing I suppose, I just wish it operated as advertised, it was too much money not to.
...
If the card reader doesn't work at all now, and wasn't working 100% before, what would make you think the phone is to blame? I could never get my 735 to load music with the data cable, but I had no problems with my card reader.
Honestly, I would eliminate all potential problems before doing something drastic, such as taking a huge loss on an expensive phone.
...
Actually my data cable works better than the card reader.

Wahoo: i think i have your answer (and mine).
iTunes works and so does MusicMatch.
And i don't think file name length matters.
what matters is it has to be recorded at 128kbs.
