what is the point of a 3g phone if it cant even compare to some 2.5g models? this thing only has a 4k color screen and 4 chord polys. whoever came up with this phone should be shot really. i mean come on all it is good for is the umts data speeds. you want be overloadin the network downloadin wallpapers and ringtones for this piece of s@#%. so nokia does the majority of their 2.5g phones with cif cameras and 3g with vga? o my goodness wake up and at least try to rum the race nokia.

The point of the phone is just that it's Nokia's first WCDMA phone for the U.S. It's a clone of the 6650, which was Nokia's first 3G phone for Europe. This is just about launching and proving the underlying WCDMA technology. WCDMA a dramatically different, complex technology. This is equivalent to when the very first digital phones hit the market.
The whole first generation (would that be 1G? 😉 ) of WCDMA phones will be like this. They will be big, the features will be a mixed bag, and the battery life will suck. It was the same when then they first launched WCDMA in Japan, and it's the same right now in Europe.
In Japan, they've had WCDMA phones for a couple years, but only now are they starting to get 3G models in Japan t...

So is this phone considered a type of a "GAIT" phone since its WCDMA and GSM? Or is that really all in the same world as each other?
...
Technically, GAIT is specific to the marriage of GSM and TDMA, so this isn't "GAIT". One of the big things GAIT did was handle the differences between the two core network types (GSM MAP vs. ANSI-41) - that's not the case here.
Therefore, a better analogy would be any tri-mode CDMA or TDMA phone, which includes both AMPS (analog) and the digital technology. This is more like that. (Same core network type, different air interface.)
This isn't something unique to this phone. Nearly all WCDMA phones for Europe also include GSM. It's pretty much a requirement, since Japan is the only place with enough WCDMA coverage to not need something like GSM for adequate voice coverage.

Doesn't it just make sense to initially start selling US versions of the better models that EurAsia is currently selling instead of remakes of their earlier models??!?!?! Why do we have to start out with the phones that will clunk just as loud as their EurAsian counterparts? That just makes no sense.

I disagree. When digital was launched here in the US, phones sucked, but then they progressed to high-end. When GSM was launched, the phones were started as "high-standard", a lot better than digital ones were when they were released. All it is is the hardware in the phone used to communicate with the network! The outside is just a shell! You can put a tin can around the transceiver, and if it's set up right, it will work (hence *faceplates*)! Nokia needs to realize, we are used to high-end phones, we aren't trying to revert back to Nokia 918's with a color screen! (Please, go to http://www.nokiausa.com/phones/918 to understand my point)
