V3 is Unlocked from Cingular!

ICS

Nov 12, 2004, 2:06 AM
Got the phone from a Cingular store in Northern California today. Took it home, put an AT&T Sim in it, and it worked fine. It's UNLOCKED! That is a fact!

ICS,

Have you forgotten that ATT and Cingular share the same network now?

No they don't. The networks are still different. It will be years before they are all on the same network.

they "share" the same network - not "are" the same network. All cell sites for cingular and att are now available to both customers.

I guess a better way for ICS to know if his/her phone is unlocked is to use a t-mobile SIM and see what happens?

I would agree that conclusive evidence would be to use a T Mobile SIM in the phone.

I'll see if I can find another Sim, but i'm pretty sure the two networks are not yet fully joined. I should also point out that the sales rep (who actually seemed to know something), said that one of the reps who had a contest phone used it with a Vodaphone sim, and it worked fine.

Shared... not joined. A better test is to see what happens when you try (and most likely fail) to access the web or IM with the AT&T SIM.

It does not work, but I was assuming that there was some reconfiguration I could do to get at least browsing to work - maybe not. At the end of the day, if I can place a call, i'm happy.

Your internet won't work. Also, you will not receive software updates. Also you won't be able to use "* services". It will work for calls though.

You should be able to re-program the WAP and MMS so they work on another carrier's system.

I use the V3 on T-Mobile (for now). Loaded the SIM and powered on. Went to T-Mobile web site and had the settings sent to the phone for internet access. Everything works. It's an un-locked phone. Still branded Cingular (little orange guy) but so what. It works and that is what matters. Also it works as a modem for my laptop.

Thanks for the info. I really want the V3. I think I'll get it on Tuesday when it comes in. I will just bring it back if I find out it's locked.

My question now is when I transfer my current cell phone number...will there be a problem when I cancel? What is the process and how will I get my previous service to work again?

This is a terrible way to find out about whether the phones will be locked or unlocked...I'm definitely not excited about this process. I hope the phone won't be locked or I have to go through a lot of headache and dish out money for services incurred and activation fees.

Those that have the V3 from Cingular (not contest winners) - can anyone help me out by popping in a SIM card (besides AT&T) to see if it works? ...

When you move your number from one carrier to the other, you automatically cancel your old number so just make sure your contract is expired.

Yes, my contract with Verizon has expired. So if I switch to Cingular and then decide this isn't for me...is it possible to go back to my previous provider with my phone number?

Yes it is unlocked. I poped in both A T Mobile SIM and another international SIM and they both worked.

Is your phone a new one or one from a Cingular contest?

I don't think it should matter, but some Cingular reps have been telling them that the new phones are locked.

I Know what you mean. They thought it was when I went to buy it. I asked to try my SIM and to their surprize it worked. Also the V180 was unlocked too and they thought that it was locked. They will never know unless they try.

That is terrifc news for many people on this forum.

I've already been convinced that they are unlocked, but wanted to be certain for the others here that are worried about it.
