Is contract a must with Cingular?
I just spoke with a Cingular rep. who told me that I will need at least one year contract, even if I bring my own unlocked V3, to have service with them. Is this true? If it's so, is it out there any company that doesn't require it.

as from my own experience, you begin service with cingular on a contract, mine was an initial 2 year, and for about 8-9 months after that we were on what you would call a month to month basis, had same account and service, but no contract. Then we did a phone upgrade and signed for another two years, etc.
I don't know if one can start service with them without a contract, likely not, as they want to hook you.
Of course, if another service with GSM can sign you up with no contract, grab their sim and ....

you can buy prepaid sim cards from t-mobile and keep on adding minutes. I heard there is a prepaid service for cingular and AT&T as well, but I think you have ot buy particular phones for those. I am using a tmobile prepaid sim card right now.

No, a contract is not a must with Cingular.
Currently if you start service with no contract, you do not get the mobile2mobile(free anytime calling to other cingular cells) included in your plan.
You can add M2M for $9.99 per month.
You also do not get any discount on the phone.
$599.99 at Company stores.
Some may even charge for the sim($25).
Hope this helps.

woh woh... we must be hearing different things. We have had no commitment contracts in the past for rate plans that had no promotional elements, but those rate plans were removed November 15th. Currently you do have to sign up on a one year contract to receive our service even with your own phone. I've gotten several emails over the past weeks reinforcing this.
I'm looking for an online resource to back up what I've heard, and I'll post it if/when I find one. So, you may not need a contract, but I think you do. Please have a little patience and give us some time to make sure.

as long as the rate plans that do not have the m2m are still in telegence the option is still there

I agree, if they're in telegence it's an option but I know it isn't advertised now. We don't have that option in POS II anymore 😕
