Does the 5600/wmp10 convert media files?

when you transfer a video file from the computer to the phone (or the miniSD card) does it shrink the file? for instance, if i wanted to put an episode of a TV show that is 170mb would it be the same seize on the phone, because i don't think it needs to be.
