Any way to increase handset volume?

I have an Audiovox SMT 5600 with service through Cingular. Both the handset volume and speakerphone seem to be extremely low, is there anyway to increase the volume? Do others that have this phone feel it is too low as well.

There is a side button on the top left (ir you are looking at the screen) that adjusts the handset volume.
