Having trouble using shortcuts

So to program a shortcut to certain option/feature, you highlight it, and hold the menu button and it assigns it to a key. I've got this part. But when I'm on the main screen, and I hold the menu button, and hit the desired key, my phone says "Shortcut Not Allowed for This Item"...and it says this for any shortcut I try...Is there something I'm missing here?

to ACCESS a shortcut you don't hold the menu button you just push it and then push the number, it works just fine on my phone

Ah! What stupid mistake on my part! You're right. Turns out, when you press the menu key, it illuminates for a few seconds, allowing you to enter a shortcut key...I was holding it the whole time, so who knows what it thought I was trying to do. This makes things much easier!

Thanks!

I've read these posts and still can't store a shortcut. I want to shortcut my calendar but can't get it to work. When I follow instructions on "shortcut" key nothing happens. HELP!!! Thanks.

All you have to do to setup a shortcut is "highlight" the item you want to create a shortcut for (in your case its the calender) and hold down the menu button until its asks you if you want to assign a shortcut
