V557 Reception - Software problem??

I just upgraded to the 557 on Wednesday from the 551 because I thought the 551 was a great phone. Then on Saturday (yesterday) my reception suddenly dropped down to nothing, to the point that my phone said Emergency Only on the status. So after going back to the Cingular store, they swapped phones for me. Today, the same thing happens, I had the phone maybe 15 hours. The rep was surprised to see me in the store again and said that none of the other 557's they have sold have had this problem. I wasn't willing to give it a try again so I switched to the Razr.

Wish I could have enjoyed my 557, seemed like a nice upgrade to the 551 ☹️

Only thing I can think of is that possibly your SIM card wasn't securely seated in the holder and the phone thought it had no SIM card installed.

i have the same problem with my 557 from time to time. swithcing to the razr solved it, but i found the razr, while a great phone, to be akward for texting, so like a dumbass i switched back to a new 557. sure enough i have the same problem. i have noticed however that rebooting the phone seems to temporarily (like for a day or two) fix it.

Well then both of us are dumbasses. I had the Razr for a week too. The reception was great in my apartment which is usually pretty bad. But it was awkward to hold and text with, plus I couldn't get it to keep a bookmark and work on media net. So I'm back to the 557 too.

Thanks for the tip!

well, i did some experimenting, and it seems that the problem is in how the phone interacts with the headset i was using. i was using a plantronics voyager bluetooth headset. upon swithcing to one of the motorola aaa-battery powered headsets, the reception problems vanished. initially, my reason for switching headsets was increased talk and standby time. i tried using the plantronics headset today, and BAM emergency only mode. of course now i will continue to use the motorola headset.

weird thing is: the plantronics one worked fine when i had the razr, so i guess it is just an incompatibility between the 557 and the headset.

I purchased the V557 December, 2005. I have been a Nokia user since 1997. O.K. Used a LG 1300 for (4) months. I have NEVER had a problem using any cell phone in my house. The V557 drops all of the time. I convinced my mobile to mobile buddy in Seattle to purchase/upgrade from his lower end Motorola to the V557. We had absolutely no problems until the V557. Poor reception, every other word is muffuled and then the call drops. He replaced his phone within the 30day period with Cingular. Same problem. Does not work in the house..drops with local calls from use in the house. My v557, the same. I bought the Motorola bluetooth H500. It has a tendancy to dial people I have not called, or just call the last person dialed. I don't like the V...

The display on my V577 phone is useless outdoors. Can't see anything, read a menu, or see an incoming call, or number dialed. Phone rang, but I didn't even know it was on till I said hello and got a response. I bought it in Dec. 2006, don't use it much, so usually have it off. The phone failed to activate at least three times when I turned it on - had to remove the battery and reinsert it before it would work. The battery was fully charged -- weak battery was not the problem. The Cingular browser button is too prominently placed so that it can be easily activated unexpectedly, thus incurring extra charges until you manage to back out. I cannot recommend this phone for anyone who works or spends much time outdoors as you can't see what y...
