Learn how to make your own MP4/AAC Ringtones for the 5600

Lots of people have been asking questions regarding how to make ringtones for the 5600. I took the liberty to post instructions along with links to neccesary software on my homepage. Please note, I called Sanyo/Fisher and they told me the phone does not support MP3 ringtones. That's what they said, could be wrong I don't have the phone so I can't test it but I heard from other people that MP3 ringtones weren't being supported. Not a big deal since MP3 ringtones actually take up more memory than MP4/AAC ringtones and the AAC's actually sound better. If you need better quality than an AAC ringtone than you got problems.

Anyways here is the link as promised:

Taking a MP3 clip and when converting it to an MP4, reducing it from between 32-20kbs still sounds good as a ringer and has little noticible artifact noise on this phone. It also saves a lot of space compared to a 96-48kbs ringer. Basically the if the ringer is mostly voices the smaller size will work just as well, if it's guitar riffs and bass drums a slightly higher quality works better. 😉

has anyone run into any problems with the file uploaders?...
i have tried both the SprintUsers.com and the ReadyLinkUsers.com utilities and with both i get a text message with a link in it...
when i goto the link, i get the following error:

HTTP Error 403: The service you requested is restricted
Thi service you requested is restricted and not available to your browser
The restriction can be based on your IP-address, hostname, browser software, time-of-day, or other variables. Most likely you requested a service that was made available to a restricted subnet.

anyone get this problem?....i made 2 hot ringers and i really want them on the phone...
please help...

Thanks. I am glad to be of service. Some sites require you to pay them for the information that I posted which is wrong since all the software needed is free and there are sites which have Uploaders to use for free so there really isn't any need to buy ringtones, pay websites and then have to browse for ringtones and then get the part of the song you don't want. With this you have complete control over your ringtone and have the opporortunity to truly make it your own. The only thing I would every pay for are games and applications. Glad to have helped you guys out.

I found that if you change the extention from mp4 to m4a the sates upload the ringer more reliably. I read that tidbit at sprintusers.com. 😉

Okay fixed it. Here is what I did differently.

*Make sure to download the Mp4 conversion codec from dbpoweramp.com .

1) I used sprintusers uploader instead of the readylink uploader.
2) At the end of the extension I put in .m4a

That fixed my problem, hope this helps anyone that's stuck. Is it suppose to come up as a movie file though.

Did you change the file extension from .mp4 to .m4a? That might work. Try using the Focus Uploader on www.sprintusers.com instead of the PCS Uploader on ReadyLinkUsers.com. That might help.

I just want to know why it keeps saving all these cool ring tones in video files. They sound great, but you don't really get all the options as you do with actual "Ringers"
I would like to set some of these as start up tones and messaging tones etc. but as you can see, you can only set these as Voice Calls or from Phone Book. Please let me know if there is something I'm doing wrong.

I was wondering that, too; also, can yuo port that over to the miniSD card, as to save some space on the phone? It seems as if you have to save a video to an SD card right after creating it, as opposed to downloading these homemade ringers.

It should not come up as a video file. Mine did at first.... then I realized I needed to chose "View Extensions" in the folder options menu of WinXP. Otherwise, while it lets you add a .m4a extension the REAL extension is still .mp4 ...you just don't see it (filename.m4a.mp4) When I fixed that the files showed up under ringers instead of video. I use the FOCUS up-loader at sprintusers.com as well. 😎

khariton, yea i couldnt find that stuff you were talkin bout... 😢 when the ringers arent in the video file are they any smaller..? cause the ones i was makin at like 20 secs were like around 101kb..?

No they aren't smaller. You have to reduce the Mp4 quality lower than 48kbs to make them smaller. I've been using 32and for som 20kbps and they still sound good.

To see the file extension:

1. open up a folder (your My documents folder will do)
2. Go to the TOOLS menu and chose FOLDER OPTIONS
3. Click on the VIEW tab
4. Below the HIDDEN FILES and FOLDERS subsection you will see a ckeckmark in the box in front of Hide Extensions For Known Filetypes.
5. Uncheck the box and click OK.

That will allow you to, very Ol' SKool like, see the .xxx extensions for all files.

When you are done making ringers I suggest putting the option back on so you don't delete extensions by accident from other files you may rename.

Eventually the u...

When I get to the point of converting the WAV to an mp4, I see that I don't have the option in the drop down menu. All I see is the option for mp3, test-conversion, and WAV. Am I doing something wrong? THX for any help.

I had the same problem. You have to have an MP4 codec installed on your computer. There is one here:

OK,

I did these steps last night; I downloaded the dbAmp converter no problem; I converted to .wav then back to MP3 lame as I didn't have MP4 as a dropdown choice.

So, I went out to the site and donwloaded a fe codecs, one being the FAAC for MP4, and I was able to theoretically convert one on my MP3s to wav, then to MP4, but after transferring to my miniSD card, the phone still doesn't recognize it.

What am I missing? Can anyone be of help? I'm open to new ideas or maybe I should have done something I didn't? 😢

Try changing the file extension from .mp4 to .m4a. that might work. Another thing, try uploading them using a freeuploader, if you have vision on your plan instead of putting them directly to the miniSD.

HEY!! Got it to work by virtue of the upload tool at http://www.sprintusers.com/focus/.

that is perfect! I downloaded 3 MP4 files; like one user posted, it's odd that it places it in videos.

One other thing I noticed; in just play mode it is incredibly loud but if you set it to be a ringer, it's just right. Conversely, if you set it to play normally, it's way too low as a ringer and will even alert you to the fact it may be too low to be used as a ringer.

Now I just need to figure out how to download/move to the miniSD card.
