Samsung MM-A880

Hi, I just bought the samsung A880 phone today and had a question. I was wondering is the LCD screen suppose to go blank when you close the phone? My other phones only dimmed the lcd screen and I could still see everything. I was wondering because my first phone kept turning off when I didn't shut down the phone and it turned out to be a manufactor's defect. Plz help!
