Dumb Dumb Dumb

First of all, GSM 1900 is cingular's core and for that matter is the most common used frequency of all gsm carriers. I am pretty sure that phone says network gsm 1900. So it will work on cingular just fine.

Cingular's network is broken into three areas - the East Coast, West Coast, and Central. The Central network is named the "Genesis" network - and it is run on 850 MHz. The original question was whether or not Cingular would sell this phone in their stores - NOT whether it would work fine on their network. This phone will not be sold in Cingular - why would they sell a phone to their customers that wouldn't work with their central network? If they did, their customers would be roaming 100% of the time when traveling through the central part of the country... this would be pointless.

No need to be rude -

The point of all of this... is it will work on cingular. Not everyone lives in the central region. So for people who don't like myself, no need to worry about roaming. You can just buy the phone unlocked and be on your way, just as with any gsm phone.

Cingular already sells phones that don't work on their network.... All motorolas sold on the west coast don't perform as well as they do on the east coast because the west coast spectrum acquired from AT&T is a nokia based network. TDMA motorolas didn't work well, and GSM motorolas don't work well, wither on AT&T or cingular. Nokias, on the other hand, far outperform all other manufacturers on this side of the market.

You are correct. Cingular will NOT be selling this version of the phone. I have a few friends in Cingular that tell me they are trying to get the N Series with compatible radios for the US. They keep saying Christmas 2006...

Maybe you should change your name to the title of this thread. Cingular's "core" network is 850. They acquired the 1900 frequency when they purchased AT&T. That being said, that phone won't sell for crap if it only uses 1900, at least around here. All of cingular's new towers from 11/01/2004 on are going to be 850, not 1900. Cool phone though.

WELL LISTEN UP CHUMP.... IN OKLAHOMA CITY, THE 1900 FREQUENCY WORKS JUST FINE, WITHOUT 850. SORRY THAT YOU DONT HAVE THAT IN YOUR AREA. MAYBE YOU SHOULD CHECK YOUR FACTS BEFORE, SPEAKING.

Dude.

No one said you *need* 850 MHz towers to get service. Cingular operates in both frequency bands, and access to either will provide access to the network.

All he's saying is that a lot of areas have either only 850 or only 1900, and cutting out either would mean a huge reduction in the phone's ability to adequately use the service.

Exactly... and if I'm head of purchasing for Cingular Wireless, I don't buy/sell a phone that won't be able to access large chunks of my network. Sure, the phone could roam over to T-mobile, but remember, Cingular customers don't pay roaming. Moral of story: If I'm Cingular, I don't sell a phone that could force my customers to roam onto another net...

hahahaha i have t-mobile but this fone will never come out for cingular till cingular aquires towers which support 3g fones. It will not be of any use if they dont have those towers. I think verizon will have them installed by the end of this year and then sell umts fones.

Cingular is looking to move everything over to 850 for the obvious reasons stated above. they are currently in the process of upgrading/combining all thier netoworks (to the USA 410 MNC you might notice some of your phones now say this as opposed to cingular) and it is primarily going to be 850 across the board. not to say that their isn't going to be 1900 available in cirten markets but if you have a 1900 mhz phone or an older cing phone with the 8 or 16 bit SIM get ready for some serious coverage issues in the next year or so if your dont upgrade.

ZombieJ,

Right on the mark, the gentleman with the 1900 mhz phone in central bumf%%%, Egypt (Oklahoma), may well be singing a far different tune down the road. Cingular HAS SOLD or is in the process of selling off ALL it's 1900 mhz towers (T-mobile is the luck recepient), will be converting most of the exisiting towers (as well as building new ones) on the 850 mhz. 3G is in the works, but will only be available in certain markets, not sure if OKLAHOMA will make this list??????? The USA410 MNC is up and running in a couple small markets, but is in process of conversion in others. If you look at the new SIM their ICCID shows 0410 indicating this "Standardization" for the National Network.

If I knew .. I'd tell you. I would assume, again for again obvious reasons, it would be markets deemed to be too small (or pathetic) to warrant dumping the huge amount of capital into putting up new towers. (possibly Oklahoma for above reason)

MORONS!!!!

Nokia will release two versions of this phone - the first is the one that's advertised - tri band without the 850 freq. when avail. in the states, they'll remove the 900 mhz and put in the 850 freq. A world Tri-band phone is different than a U.S. Tri-band phone.

I have customers come in all the time with a tri band phone (especially those from Asia) and it has the 1900, 900, and 1800 frequencies. They come to the states and can only use their phones in the city (1900 mhz) (850mhz in the country). Now if you look at any triband phone in the US, it'll have the 850/1900 and either the 1800 or 900 band. A customer from Thailand had a nokia 3100 from over there with only the 1900 freq., our 3100 was missing the 900 freq. ...

Oh absolutly. There's no way Cingular could NOT release this phone if they have any credibility (although that is debatable). And there would have to be a North American version with international roaming, because by themselves the 1900 or 850 frequencies are very limited, they need eachother.

For example, person buys a world phone that only has 1900mhz for US roaming and can't use phone in their house but can outside. Reason being that the lower (cellular) frequencies are better at pentrating walls, which is why analogue had great service inside buildings. So that's why any phone (or network) worth anything has both a high and low frequency (900/1800 or 850/1900).

And getting back to the point, I predict Cingular will get a dual band ...
