that was a silly thing to say. is nextel the only manufacturer that can come out with a rugged PTT phone? Motorola scored big with that idea, but now someone has to step in with a phone that hits that market. Nokia made a phone like this 2 yrs ago.

No it wasn't silly, it's my opinion, it looks like a Nextel phone. I personally can't stand the Nextel phones so for me it looks terrible.

i think what he meant was that its not a "nextel" idea...nextel doesnt make phones, just like verizon or sprint dont. its a motorola phone, so its looks like a moto phone not a nextel phone 🙂

Motorola and Nextel are practically synonymous because Motorola is the only phone manufacturer for Nextel.
Verizon and Sprint do have their own branded phones, however, they are technically made by smaller phone manufacturers like UTstarcom and Pantech.

doesnt matter...nextel has no say whats so ever on phone styles or what kind of phone motorola makes... MOTO pretty much chooses what phones they want to introduce to nextel and then nextel picks which ones they like.

That's the relationship between any carrier and phone manufacturer. The carrier doesn't tell the manufacturer what to make.
If someone says "nextel phone", anyone familiar with the carrier will know that the phone is made by Motorola because the two are so closely related. I'm not arguing the fact that Motorola creates the phones to be used on the Nextel network. The terminology is just not worth getting anal about.

Actually this is untrue. I work for a wireless company and the carrier absolutly dictates what they want in a phone, that includes design, features and the look of the phone. Some wireless developers such as LG and Samsung will turn out 10 different designs and present them to a carrier, the carrier will pick what they like and tell the developer what to change and tweak. The carrier has almost complete control in what they want in a phone. If a wireless developer does not do what the carrier wants, then the carrier will not carry the phone. Wireless companies are somewhat at the mercy of the carriers. This is a fact.

It's really not that silly to associate Nextel phones with ruggedness because that's what they are. But that isn't to say that Motorola is the only manufacturer that adds rubber grips and strong plastic to their phones. There have been some Sanyo phones that look suspiciously like Motorola's iDen phones.
