Furthermore, once you have reflashed your old a950 with the new firmware, there is no going back to the old, either. It is rumored that in the future, however, when other fixes become available for the older phones, there will be two versions, one for the old mp3 playing phones, and one version for the newer wma music media phones."

Why can't you go back if they flash your A950 to the new firmware? Is there some technical reason? Verizon corporate policy?

I would imagine Verizon wants people to subscribe to their VCAST MUSIC service and if new customers had an option of getting their new phones flashed with the old firmware, they wouldn't need VCAST MUSIC. Therefore, while I can't imagine a reason technically why Verizon couldn't let you reflash your new phone firmware over with the old firmware, I do understand why they won't let you do it. They are just greedy for your download business. That they reluctantly released the a950 as a mp3 Maestro to begin with, was only to compete with other cell providers that had mp3 player-phones available at a time when they didn't have their wma music download service act ready to market. Now they do. So Verizon would love for all the early a950 owne...

I just purchase my a950 4 days ago along with a 512MB transflash card. I must have the original software because my phone will only read mp3 files. I was expecting it only to support wma. I hope to keep this software version. Has anyone heard if Verizon may force this phone to be upgraded?

They are not going to "force" an upgrade. Many of us bought this phone because it was advertised to support .mp3. Any attempt to force a removal of that feature would probably be met by another round of lawsuits.

Verizon is using the improved features of the .wma player as a carrot to convince current owners to upgrade.

Verizon will support you if you choose to keep your mp3 player, although for the reasons already stated, they would love if you would "upgrade". Don't expect any mp3 player enhancements (like shuffle play and music folders), but if phone fixes are needed or non player enhancements are added down the road, Verizon will have new firmware versions for you that will allow you to keep your mp3 player capability and still add the other changes. This will require Verizon to come out with separate new firmware versions for the mp3 player and for the wma music player. When they do, I can imagine problems. Verizon will need to question anybody with the orginal y103 firmware coming in for an upgrade, whether they want the phone fixes with or witho...

Don't worry about the new software upgrade for this phone. It's no threat to anyone. I just bought the ugraded version of the 950 four days ago and the new version allows you to download your own mp3s to the phone and buy the new VCAST music. It's great. I haven't used the VCAST music service yet, but I like having the capability on my phone because sometimes I just want to download one song without buying the whole album.

I wish someone would have encouraged me to try this phone sooner. I believe this one is definitely a keeper!!! 😁

But if after you read my posting, you decide you want to get your phone upgraded, just check with the a VW technician to make sure they are not going to remove the software for the MP3 player. A...

I am not sure which firmware version you have, but the new firmware does NOT allow you to put mp3 music files on your phone and play them. If you have the newest firmware you can only put wma music files on your phone. However, it is possible to install mp3 ringtones on the new phones in the same manner as with the older a950's.

According to the manual that came with my phone, it states that the music sync option "allows you to transfer music files (MP3 and WMA format) from your PC."

So what software version does your phone report? I have the original Y103 that came with the phone. I don't want to lose MP3 capability, but like the idea of folders/song organization.

Also, what is the current hardware version? My phone is reporting "A950.08"

I think Samsung has not updated the manual yet. The pdf manual that you can download from their web site has not been changed yet and still discusses mp3 support.

If you have Windows Media Player 10, and the syncing cable for your phone, you can convert ALL and any mp3 files over to wma, and then load 'em up. You do NOT have to subscribe and pay the $15/month for VCast Music.

Also, Verizon isn't trying to pull one over on anybody. They are required to give out an informational brochure and fully disclose that your phone will lose the mp3 playing capability. I have the older version currently, and have played with the store's wma demo, and I think it's great- you can create and manage playlists, shuffle your tunes, everything.

Also, I think it's kind of weird that someone wouldn't want to buy a memory card if they are going to use their phone to play music. You'll be able to put like, 5 songs on ...
