Okay, so this is quite similar to the SMT-5600. How do you get the recently used icons to be on the side rather than the very top?

That's Orange's custom home screen for Smartphones. Those icons are actually part of a shortcut menu thing - not the regular recent apps thing.
The C500 had that, too. It's on every Orange Smartphone now. I don't think it's available separately, but one of the beauties of the Smartphone platform is that there are TONS of third-party home screen layouts and plugins you can download. I'm sure someone has made something like that for non-Orange phones.
