EDGE vs WI-FI? What's the difference?

I'm perhaps interested in this phone. I like the form factor and large display, along with some other features. I know it doesn't have Wi-Fi, but it does have EDGE. Can someone explain the difference?

If I understand correctly, if a phone has Wi-Fi, I can check email or surf anywhere there is an available connection, e.g., hotels, coffeeshops, etc. How about EDGE? Do I have to subscribe to my provider's network (mine is Cingular) at additional cost to email or surf?

I know this is a basic question, but please don't flame too much. Thanks.

EGDE is (relatively) high-speed data over Cingular's network. Generally, you have data connectivity (at least GPRS which is slower than EDGE) anywhere you have Cingular service. You can either get flat-rate unlimited use (higher cost) or pay for each bit of data you transfer over the network.

First reply very good. Just in case you did't quite get everything they said. If you don't have a data plan, along with your voice plan, the EDGE data service can get a little pricey. If you start with Media Basics, its considerably cheaper. If you are a very heavy data, MMS user, you can go to the unlimited plan for about $20. I believe the Media Basic's is about $10. You want go wrong with this specific phone, buy the way. 😈
