Trouble with Moto h700 earbud?

I just bought the Moto h700 earbud as an upgrade to my original HS810 (?). While I like it, in general, I seem to be having problems with it. Pairing was successul. When not in a call, opening and closing the boom links it to the phone without issue. The problem is that I can't get it to link to the phone when I'm in a call already. This worked fine with the HS810 (removed from the list of BT devices in favor of the new h700). In fact, if I try to link to the phone when a call is in-progress, I have to reboot the phone to get the earbud to link at all, even when the call is over.
Anyone else have this problem, or could it be a defective bud?
