is Voice/Data plan required for PDAs/Smartphones? (VZW)

I went to my local Verizon store and told the sales rep I was looking at some PDAs to replace my chocolate (specifically the Q).

Anyway, he asked what I was going to use it for, and I told him mainly for normal use, txt messaging, and keeping up with appointments.

He than said "Well if you get a PDA/Smartphone, you HAVE to have a voice/data plan."

Is this true?

Yes, its true.
For a while VZW was vague (deliberately, I believe) on this matter, and I got 'caught' when upgrading to a Q from my LG 8100, turning down the data plan, thinking I'd just be billed for the $5 mobile web like before. Nope. They billed me $350 extra for data usage that month. I argued and argued that it was unfair since I was using the same sites as mobile web, but to no avail. Eventually, I took them to the BBB and got the charges erased, but sadly you just can't use Verizon smartphones in that way. VZW is just too damn greedy.
At least now they force you to accept the data plan when you activate, so you can't get caught like I did. Still . . .
If you go for it, one word of caution: Don't underestimate data usage. The 1st m...

ok 1 more thing.

my current plan is just a regular plan with another phone (RAZR, my moms)added to it.

Now if I switch my current plan to the voice/data plan, can i still share those same minutes with both phone lines?

forgot to mention:

if i can add the same line, will I have to add an additional 10 dollars to the 450 min plan (79.99) or will it still remain 79.99 with both my phones already in my plan.

Are you sure you have that right? 79.99 for 450 minutes?

In my area (NYC) you can get 1350 minutes for 79.99. 450 minutes is 39.99 (these are regular plans for one phone only).

For 2 lines, you will have to go to a familyshare plan. For 69.99 (in my area) you get 700 shared minutes, .45 per minute for overage. For 89.99 you get 1400 minutes, .40 per minute for overage.

Check the website, it's pretty clear. If you speak to the reps, make sure they tell you the total amount due each month.

Good luck.

yea in my area its 79.99 for 450 minutes 🙄

i've been searching on these boards, a lot of people have said that if you tell them to block National Access and make sure you don't recieve or transmit data it would work. I will just swing by my store again tommorrow and get the details.

thanks for the help

Verizon does NOT force you to get an unlimited data plan, but it is heavily pushed in stores. and rightfully so, to avoid issues like what jreisner had.

heres the scoop: in the beginning Verizon brought out the 'unlimited' pda plan and had no way in the system to provision an account without it. There were tricks that store reps learned but it ended up causing rediculous bills.

NOW.. for the past 2 years or so, theyve had the pay as you go kilobyte plan where basically you pay 15 bucks per megabyte of data transfer. The issue is if you decline the 45 dollar unlimited plan, all data access is billed to you at that higher rate. AND make no mistake, the xhtml rewrite of your sites on an 8100 or a razr is NOT the same as the sites you se...

yes, the data can be blocked, but make sure you dont have a plan you pay for cause then youd be wasting your money. The main hassle is having to call cust care and request to lift the block just to heck your email....yuk... a pain in the ass.

Listen, bro. You do whatever makes you happy, but as a wireless veteran here let me testify to this: The Q, the Treos, the pocket pc devices - they are all designed around high speed data services. You get a Q with no data plan- just to save the money- and youll have a phone, a calandar, and oh yeah a music player. just like an LG 8300 or 8100 or any other mobile web 2.0 device. if you want all that plus a real keyboard, get an enV. or wait til valntines day and get the samsung u740. If you w...
