Has anybody found that several of the ROMs cause the phone to freeze-up?
Is there a solution to this?
Also - is there anything that can be done to unfreeze the phone other than drop the battery?

after you download the Nes emulator unzip it and copy it to your phone or mini-SD card.
The next step is to find "NES ROMS on the web.
when you find then download them and copy them to A folder on your Q. I created shortcuts to my games folder using resco explorer on the Q but you can use the explorer with AS or you can use the slow file manager built in your Q.
I have found a few of the classic Roms like super Mario bros Pacman and so forth but I'M having trouble configuring the controls for the emulator some times it works OK and others it does not if anyone has mastered the controls maybe they can share the settings used with us.

Probably not, or at least, not very well. It takes a lot of computing power to emulate a game console well, which the Q doesn't have. You might be able to find gameboy games though.

Man I downloaded Pocketnes, unzipped it and stored it on my minisd.
i have a few roms. i'm assuming these need to be unzipped as well. WellI unzipped them and added them to my mem card as well. Everything is in the same folder and i transfered that folder to my games folder on the Q
Pocketnes runs, but when i choose File>open nothing happens.
what am i doing wrong?

Don't open the NesEmulator instead open the Rom's and that will bring the emulator up too!
