T-mobile vs. i-mate models - what is the little hood?

I've noticed that the T-mobile version of this phone has a little hood on top - the antenna maybe? The i-mate version (SP5m) doesn't have that hood, which makes it about 1/4 inch shorter. Does anyone know if has poorer reception/loss of other functionality?

i'm not sure about loss of reception on the i mate but what i understand about the sda it is where the antenna and wifi is housed, i could be wrong, but that what i hear
