What is contact ID?

When I goto "My Sounds" and select "Options" I can set a sound to ringtone, alert tone or Contact ID. What the heck does contact ID do? I assigned a sound to some of my contacts but what does that do?

Contct ID is the name of the person calling you. The thing you did is when someone calls you you hear a different ring for each contact in my understanding. Correct me if im wrong!

I figured out why it wasn't working. I didn't put the area code in the contact so it didn't recognize the number properly. I added AC to the contact number and now the ringtone and picture work for the contact.
