Two quick questions....
1. Can the phone play my own mp3's (as in the lg 8300)?
2. Can I load my own mp3 ringers that I send to myself (as in the lg 8300)?
I totally want this phone but those two issues are very important to me.

According to the phone itself, It was meant that the SCH-a990, not to play mp3s. Afortunately you can by going to this secret menu in order to play mp3s, but one problem is that you have to access this menu to access the mp3 player. I don't know if you can send your own mp3' to the phone.

Yea you can but it's easier to play them in WMAs. Also I've heard they disabled the secret menu in an update, which is needed to get to the mp3 playing menu.
And it depends on what you mean by loading your own mp3 ringers. There is a way to make certain songs your ringtones provided you have a usb cable and bitpim. I might've provided a link on an old post. If not, ask again and I will provide.

About the ringers though, in the lg 8300, to make my own ringers all i had to do was take a thirty sec mp3 clip or so and e-mail to mytendigitcellnumber@vzwpix.com, once the mms message arrived i simply saved the sound file as a ringer and wala!
I used to use bitpim for my old lg 8100 but i think i messed up my phone with it so im alittle skidish to use it again. But if thats the only way to get custom ringers on the phone (without going through GIN of course) well then i got some thinking to do 😕
