MountainMike's review of the LG A340

original version, submitted May 15, 2016, 1:04 AM:

Well-designed phone: BASIC

The LG a340 was purchased so I could use worldwide GSM networks; Verizon (VZN) has no CDMA network outside of North America, as far as I can determine. In particular, Panama (PA) for my use. I had a generic "VeryCool" brand GSM candy bar type phone in PA, and the unprotected earphone opening must have become plugged (by pocket lint or ??), because I could not hear the people that I had called on the #@& thing! A resident gringo of PA had suggested I obtain a used Motorola, LG, or Samsung cell for PA, but another "friend" guided me into a new "Knock off" generic cell. A big mistake. This was an important PA trip and this device was out of commission. My Verizon phone was also as useful as a paperweight! Everyone in PA uses a cell phone, by the way. I looked over possible used phones using PhoneScoop.com user reviews as a guide. I picked LG as a better brand than my usual Motorola brand. The a340 is a relatively new clam shell (flip) phone. I also based my choice on my use of a CDMA-based LG that I used on the VZN; the "Revere". Also used the Moto W766 on VZN. PROs: Loud earpiece (senior mode) Very good battery life (4 days) Recharges quickly (~2 hrs.) Clear, large display (adjustable fonts) Clear, loud speakerphone Decent signal capture CONs: No earphone/mic for true "hands free" operation Slippery exterior - needs "rubberizing" to increase grip on phone! Must be unlocked to operate off of AT&T (US $2.00) I have used this phone since Jan. 2016 - purchased used off eBay.
